I went and did it again. Trying to take care of a silly barn cat who wouldn't let me put mite meds in his ear. He sliced my finger pad clean open and deep with a claw. Oh, the pain from such a small injury. I wasn't sure if I need stitches but there was something popping out of wound.

It is bandaged but still bleeds if removed. Dang it, why can't I stop getting injured by these kitties who profess to love me...until they don't?

At least the new kitten and I get along...until she uses my leg as a climbing tower.

has any one had 2 hens sit on 1 nest, hatch and mother said hatchlings together?

Yes, I had a Sizzle and Silkie sit, hatch and raise a clutch together. It worked well because one was a better mother when they were young and then ditched them but the second one took over when they were older. The chicks went back and forth between the two.

Last night we saw our first flock of migrating geese.

The storms that rumbled through yesterday, last night and this morning has changed our plans for the day. DH had to work several hours during the night cutting trees off the roads, our pig was going to be butchered this morning which is on hold, Dh and son were headed to watch the tractor parade but they are now undecided. I however, still have to go do the grocery shopping I have been putting off.

Oh please get a stitch in that and wear gloves when dealing with barn cats in the future. It hurts just reading your post. Who knows what bacteria they're harboring too so yeah, get it looked at, PLEASE!!!!! I don't mean to sound condescending but the mother in me kicked in reading this. Please, please, please. I don't handle my barn cats at all, even the semi-friendly ones. I catch them in cages and hand them to professionals if they need close contact assistance. When I worm them I mix the med with the soft food and stand back with a squirt gun to discourage second helpings.

I hatched my FBCM rooster from Jerry's eggs. But I should have girls from elsewhere if I mean to breed them, don't you think? I guess I could get rid of him and try again for hens. *shrug*

Rinse it thoroughly with water until no debris is left in cut, then rinse with hydrogen peroxide, let set a while...slather with triple antibiotic ointment with pain relief then bandage tightly.
I've had plenty of deep cuts and hands and fingers, if cleaned and bandaged promptly, no need for stitches....finger pad is easy to pressure bandage.

Tho if you haven't had a tetanus shot in less than ten years, go get one.

I loaded up my truck with chickens yesterday after work, picked up DD from school, & we dropped the chickens off at the fairgrounds. We brought in 2 meaties, 2 pullets, & 3 banties. The 2 meaties didn't weigh in as big as we've had before. I chose not to let them get at big this year, because last year I was struggling to keep their fat, waddling, bums alive long enough to make it to fair. Last year the 2 hens we brought weighed in at 11.2 lbs ea. This year the hens weighed in at 9.8 & 9.0 lbs. Much more manageable & I'm not nearly afraid of them having heart attacks. DD wanted to bring roosters this year, but we ended up with a meat flock of all hens & just 1 roo. Since she needs to bring a pair, it had to be 2 hens again.

The open class event is tomorrow, the showmanship event is Sunday, & the livestock auction is on Wednesday. THEN IT'S DONE. Phew. Honestly I can't wait. I love that DD does the 4H, gets involved with the group & the farm/animals, but I'm ready for the time off from "4H fair-crazy".

Hubby was out working in the barn the other day trying to get our plucker built. It is time! 2 meaties gone to the fair & the rest need to go to freezer camp. He has to do some finagling to it yet but once it's done it's going to be SO MUCH NICER to process the chickens. Instead of the traditional whizbang with pulley type setup, he is trying to reconfigure an old pottery wheel. Hopefully it works. If it doesn't, then we'll just go to the traditional setup. I would have liked to keep the wheel (been wanting to take a pottery class just for fun), but plucking chickens sucks. LOL.

I have lots of things to get done, but little time. Aside from the fair stuff. I NEED to get my tomatoes canned & get the spaghetti squash in before that all goes to waste. And DH & I will be helping our friends redo their roof this weekend/next weekend etc as well. Ugh. No vacation time left from work & no rest for the wicked. ;)

It must be exhausting to have the fair right after the first week of school. Good luck! Will Oliver be there? Maybe we'll visit the fair this weekend. :)

hey just returning to say hi....the pic in the avatar is a yellow golden pheasant i got from alex in lapeer...what a great guy.. he breeds alot of birds...and knows his stuff...the bird is about four years old....and another solution for internal buggers is copper sulfate...copper sulfate is something that you put in the water it also keeps the water from getting algea and slimmy....it looks like a bunch of blue crystals. and is about 2 bucks for a pound of it... a great website is https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/medicine-chart
