Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I know, I swear I'm getting broody or something as well. getting ideas of what I want to do next year for chicks.

Grr... my spring hatching plans are nixed - again.

My Orpington rooster passed away spontaneously. I don't know what he died from. He seemed perfectly healthy one day, & then frozen solid the next, but now I'm out a rooster again. He didn't crow & he wasn't really interested in his job, so maybe it's just as well. I need to replace him. What kind do I want? I'm thinking a BCM, or Ameraucana... DH wants another Brahma. I'm not so sure on the Brahma... he was an awesome rooster, but he was just so big & gumpy that he really did a number on the girls' backs. The ladies seem to be happier without cuts & missing back feathers.

I'm fine with mixed breed chicks in the spring. Really I like to hatch them & so I get a nice color combination of eggs from the new girls & dinner from the boys.

If I get a marans rooster & breed him to my Ameraucana hens, will I get olive eggs? Does anybody have a nice & gentle marans rooster they need to rehome?

Yesterday I boned out the last deer taken during gun season. A small doe that David had taken resulted in 32 pounds of boned prime meat. I know most people seem to think that they should yield much more but after having processed over 400 deer in my lifetime I know that end result to be about average. When you trim a deer like we do, a lot of what others package is cut off. Sinew from deer was once used for sewing thread and bow strings; neither are something I want in my diet. So as we process deer it's with the mantra that if it's white it ain't right. Shot placement can often result in a substantial loss of useable meat. Has anyone else noticed that when boning out a deer just how long the front quarters take. It seems that 1/3 of the deer takes 2/3 of the time.

@bigmrg74 : we breed the Iowa Blues & will be doing some hatches in 2015 . You can pm us (myself or Candy442). Also the club website link is at the bottom of our sigs . we love the Iowas
Yeah, its a thought for me. You're close enough that it wouldn't be any big deal for me to drive up and pick a couple of chicks up. Maybe even spending the day paying for them in a little sweat equity. I am kinda handy when it comes to picking things up and put them down.

My rooster is a Huge Buff Brahma named Hobo. Why Hobo you ask? He was one of those chickens that just showed up from thin air. We had just gotten rid of all of our roosters and did not plan on having another right off. A week later here's this huge fella marching up and down the girls run. He's so gentle we should have named him Gentle Giant but he's really just a Hobo hitching a ride on my gravy train. He's been running the show for a few years now. You should totally get one like mine! And I can I put you down for some bunnies, or baby goats come springtime?

So the chickens have been relocated in the trailer coop at the house for about a week now, the new bantys and the muscovy duck all live in there with them and i've not seen a single egg yet. What is wrong with these chickens

They have FREE CHOICE Flock crumbles, alfalfa pellets, oyster shells, cracked corn, scratch, and even hay to pick thru and not an egg yet. Roughly 20 chickens you would think i would get at least 1 egg in a weeks time.
