Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Favorelles are very sweet, sometimes lower in the pecking order, especially if you have more aggressive breeds in the group. I've had three Speckled Sussex cocks, one of whom was a nice guy. The hens are wonderful though. Right now I've got a BC Marans cockrel from Wynette and a blue laced red Wyandotte (from MMcM) who are both good boys, and the black Ameracauna rooster in my avatar was very nice. I am looking to rehome the Wyandotte, as he's the extra cockrel I don't need this year. Mary

Grrrr.... Think I dropped my debit card somewhere out in the snow in the driveway. Went go get some groceries tonight and went to swipe the card, wasn't in it spot in my wallet. looked high and low in my coat, my car for it, stopped in at the Wendy's where I last used it at their drive thru, and finally back home here to check the pants I was wearing yesterday. Not there. Hopefully, its just under the snow somewhere. I called to cancel it, and I figure that I'll find in when the snow melts. Be easier to get a new one tomorrow.

Wow, have not been on here in a while(AGAIN! SHAME on me

) and Chickenstock is right around the corner??? Boy, better start planning on that!

Ok Duck folks! Need a little help here. What duck breed is the QUIETEST??? I have 3 Pekins, and they are too noisy for me and my family. I always wanted Indian Runners, but are they QUIET??? Want ducks for eggs, great free-ranging quality and extra males and offspring for meat. Thanks for your input! I have a big urge to order chicks ad ducklings this year. I had held off the mail order bug for about two years now, and can't shake it off anymore!

Bout time Farmerboy- we thought you'd abandoned us. Muscovies are the quietest. They don't usually quack, they hiss to talk. And they are usually very personable, the males get close to goose in size and are supposed to be great eating (I just can't eat my buddies). Your birds look great. Do you plan on selling any bourbon red hens this year?

Thanks Trefoil, I have a Muscovy hen, and I like her and been wanting more for her, but they are seasonal layers, I need duck eggs year 'round.

Hey there Farmerboy. The last time I saw you I was picking up eggs for Glam from you on my way to CS. Although I cannot recommend a quiet duck I have a khaki Campbell and Pekin flock that slow down in winter but lay all year. Hopefully you and your wife be able to make CS this year.

Unfortunately I know roosters. I have an over population right now and about ten will be leaving us. That said I find there really is no rhyme or reason to who ends up with an attitude. Meanest roo I ever had was a Polish. Currently I have coop 1 - Ameraucana, Basque, Orloff, Polish, Malay, Faverolle, OEG, du 'Uccle. Coop 2 -Cocin, Polish and Creole, Coop 3 - 6 barn yard mixes all with creole papa, coop 4 - Showgirl, Coop 5 - Basque, OEG and Silkie x, heated coop - 5 Seremas. So the only fighting I have is the new mixed boys. I have three showing attitude now, a barn yard mix an OEG and a Serema. All will be going but they are all about the same age, not yet a year.

I currently have Benny and June ( bantam Polish) in the basement.

Yesterday I gave them water about 8:30 am and then went to break ice and freshen at 11 before I left for work. Benny had iced his crest and had ice covering his wattles. I tried to hand melt it but I wouldn't so since I had to leave then for work I just tossed them in the emergency cage. I don't know if he will lose a piece or not. He isn't swollen so I think that is a good sign.

I'm not looking forward to today's "snow event". DH and I are betting on which prediction is right. He says the one which calls for 5" and I say 10". Either way the wind is going to make it a mess.

yikes. that stinks. Definitely easier than digging in that snow. I hope you have no problems replacing it.

Buffs are generally a gentle breed.

Do you mean buff Orpingtons?

I agree with this, you either have to raise several to have a choice, or get an adult one from someone else that has already been proven non aggressive.

I found that age really helps, another boost to children's "respect" is when they have children. Rebellion against authority doesn't have to be taught, I think for most teenagers it comes naturally. The shock of being the hated authority changes the attitude of most kids.

I thoroughly 2nd that.

I made it almost 1/2 through last winter before getting tendon problems from stomping rubber bowls. A 5lb sledge works better and painlessly.

Aww.
She doesn't plan to have kids...and were it just normal teen age angst and just us as her only parental influence... I could deal with that.

But her mother was constantly, undermining everything we tried to do for DD... we ended up taking custody because of various reasons, but the main were because the kid was smoking at 10 yrs old, and failing school because her mom was pregnant and was keeping her home to be her hand maid and house keeper or just to let the kid do what she wanted. Her mom was coaching her to lie to us (we could hear her talking in the back ground)... we had to pay for everything, which we would do if we felt it would help better the kid...... it was just a horrible thing for all involved. We had custody until she was 16, then other trouble with her mother started... and she ended up going back there. (I think mom was hoping for more child support money, and DD was hoping to get away from a house with "rules".. but we had a good lawyer!).. stupid kid ended up dropping out of school 3 months before graduation...... 3 MONTHS!!! DD ended up getting her GED once she discovered she was going no where without it... When we found out she was going to go to college, we paid for a used car for her, no strings attached. (even paid to fix it a few times) I don't know what happened to that one, but we ended up financing a better car to help her, and then the trouble started again. I cannot begin to go into the details of all the history, this isn't the place for it.. but we got tired of all the lies... she is 27 yrs. old now and there was no reason for her to be this way when all we've ever done was try to help her. But those days are over. And she's decided that her mom knows best... so we hope they are happy. This cash cow has dried up! If she wants to be part of our lives, that is fine we will welcome her. But we will no longer help her financially.
