Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

This sounds great - please post pics!!!

Haven't posted in quite a while, but did get caught up on reading posts.

Re: ISA browns, love the production.  We have been fortunate and had really friendly birds that like to be held.  Our black sex link on the other hand can be a witch!!

Our kids are going to do production trios for 4-H/fair this year.  We need to decide soon what they are going to get.  Options are Barred Rock, Isa Brown or Leghorns.  I know DH is going to push for them to get Isa, but I am leaning toward Barred Rock - end of the day it is up to the kids what they want to do!

Lost my pet guinea last Friday.  I was home with the kids so we let the birds out to free-range.  Jewel, the guinea that I hand raised in the house since he was 1 hour old and thought I was his mama, kept coming up to the backdoor and calling to come in (yes, he would come in the house, sit on my lap, preen my hair for me, raise a ruckus if he wasn't getting enough attention and generally act like he ruled the roost - which he did :).  I didn't let him in because I was busy and didn't want him (literally) underfoot.  A bit later he started again and had three of the laying hens with him on the back steps - um, no way buddy, you ain't bringing in friends!! DD went outside and played with him for about an hour and a half.  DS took his remote control helicopter out to play and that was a hoot watching Jewel run to wherever it landed.   It had only been about 20 minutes since DD took some veggie scraps up to the coop when DH got home from work and went to fill feeders and water.  He came back to the house and asked when was the last time I had seen Jewel.  I figured he couldn't find him to put him in the coop for the night, but instead, DH had found him dead by the coop.  He had a hole in his neck and had bled out.  I was heartbroken.  He was an awesome friendly bird with personality plus!!  One day he even headed around to the front door because no one was answering his demand at the back door and he wanted to see his mama!!

Will do on the pics.  What caused the hole in Jewel's neck?  Did I miss something?  Sorry for your loss.

We are not sure. I am leaning toward a raptor, perhaps an owl as it was heading on to dusk. I am wonderng if it grabbed him and got startled by the dog. It was a large enough hole for a talon. No other injuries. A complete mystery.

uchytil........ I know we have discussed before. But I would like to find out a bit more about the barn you built. DH and I want to put something up..both of us want a traditional barn but don't want to put up a pole barn. I'm interested in the trusses you used for the roof and floor joists. Could you pm me details and maybe some picts of the inside when you get a chance? Thanks!

I think I finally caught up! So so busy!
Opa that looks awesome!

My flock of too many have decided they can lay eggs again. I really think they it was going to be cold and just held on for awhile. Most days I get a dozen now and that makes for happy co workers.

So happy to see warmer temps for the weekend. My coops need a cleaning.

Raz, don't give in to the cigs! When my mom found out she had lung cancer, both of my parents quit. 17 yrs later my Dad is still smoke free, even after my mom passed away. I never thought he would stay away after she died, but I'm so happy he has. Stay strong!

Yep, my girls have started earning their keep again, too. Had been getting 1-3/day since early October. Getting 3-6 now...and today is not over, so may break the "6". That's with 10 layers. The pullets that were born on Mother's Day LOOK like they are at POL..

.Kali, the Black Ameraucana..I don't know what her deal is. Rana started laying early September, just before the hawk got her. Kali is only 4 weeks younger, so I expected her to start in October; tho I've read she (Rana) may have been an anomaly as Ameraucanas can take a LONG time to start laying.

Just really want my colored eggs..both pullets are EEs, & my other EE hasn't resumed laying yet.

@Opa
That pastrami looks amazing :drool

Welcome to all the newcomers & very sorry for the sick/lost birds ..

Will Rogers once said that the best doctors were veterinarians because they can't ask the patient what is wrong with them, they just have to know. Personally I would like to find a doctor who does medicine rather than practice.

As a builder I could practice on a customer home. We had to do the job right the first time, or the cost to do it again would be on us. It's not so with doctors. When you go to them and their first procedure doesn't work they try something different while charging you for every moment of their time.

I had what was supposedly a minor elbow surgery 15 months ago. Shortly after the procedure I came down with MRSA, a highly drug resistant infection commonly contacted in hospitals. Now all these months later I am still dealing with a wound that refuses to heal.

A month ago the incision had finally stopped draining and was almost totally closed. Then shortly after the first of this month it flared up again and a third surgery was proposed with the doctor indicating that it wasn't a big deal. However, before operating he wanted me to see yet another specialist.

Now it turns out that the situation is a big deal. The infection has moved into the bone and must be debrided. Prior to the surgery and for approximately 8 weeks I will be once again on a super strong anti-biotic that must be given twice daily via a PICC line.

Needless to say I am not a happy camper yet it is something I can't ignore. Doing nothing could result in the loss of the arm and perhaps even more.

I am sending healing vibes and prayers they get this wound under control quickly. I'm with you, I wish Dr's didn't practice on us. I need to go back after years of being physician free, and I am not quite sure what to expect anymore. When I worked in medicine, it was so much different.
