Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

the peafhens wont be laying until prolly april...my guess...they will only be laying if your in a warmer climate...as for the blue mutants i wont have any of those until later this season...and if you would like i can get you some when i pick my set up...think the guy is only charging 10 for each...as for any birds from anyone now..ive been looking into npip and everything with flocks and diseases scares me now....so im super paranoid about getting new stock...even from breeders that are certified it dont mean they are clean birds....from what the d of agriculture lady said...just going to get my flock tested once the black birds are here and then go from there...everything will be on more then a 30 day quarantine for sure...and those birds will be tested before put into my existing flock...wow maybe when your hear again next i can show you some of the emails i got from people...its quite interesting to see facts but im not the one to post emails and such those are private

So what did you get?

"Assorted Pullets." From TSC. I will not be purchasing thru them again. New to Chick Days and many things chicken related, I thought Chick Days would be a bigger deal, that there would be many bins of carefully organized chicks to choose from. I was wrong. There were four bins-and one of the bins offered not chicks, but ducklings! Well, OK, I think to myself. Do You want chickens or not? (Hint: "Yes.") So I took the plunge. The nice TSC employee who answered over the phone said that they were getting Sussex, Delawares, and Isa Browns. My chicks look like...well, hang on & i'll get some pictures. I call them Blondie, Blondie, Blondie, Red, Buttmuncher, and Stripes.

That's too funny.  I saw this add and recognized the phone number, looked at my contact list and saw it was you.  Anyway good luck moving him.

Crazy is it? lol Thanks.

Glad that your dad is doing well!

You might give your buck another month or two...they seem slower to developed the rape all the girls mentality. We have a pure nubian buck who is just now coming up on 12 months and only started showing interested in the girls about a week ago, until then he could have cared less and he also does not yet smell like a buck...our saanen buck was a bit quicker, showing the ladies his best bits around about 11 month and now at 13 months he has the buck smell and is actively trying to bred back the girls who kidded already in his pen. If he is the only buck you have and you have "seasonal" breeding does they likely will not come into heat until august unless "exposed" to a "new" buck..so we trick ours. If you have the space move the buck to a different pen for 1-2 weeks where he can not see the girls and then put him back with your girls and they should come in within a week or two. Or you can sell him and try another buck but it is still going to take 1-2 weeks before they come in after the new buck arrives.

Mmm, if what you say is true, then I would keep him a while longer. But I need a new unrelated buck as I have the buck's mother on site, so I don't want any imbreeding. She is the only one that is bred as I had taken her to a friend's farm to be bred last fall, so its not a total loss on the goat part. Still, it stinks that I will be feeding two other does for a whole year before getting anything back from them. Oh well, the life on the farm.

Yeah sure i'm up for some learning when i stop over next. When are you going to get your blues? The diseases scare me too...its the same with goats..i dont want any strange goats on my property and what does show up is going into quarantine pens. i stud my bucks out but the farms have to have negative paper work for the does. The polish i just got are in quarantine too although i have gotten animals from the same lady before and they have all been healthy and disease free...though i have some serious scaley leg mites going on from the barred rocks/ barred buffs because they were allowed to free range unattended on Greg's old farm(by the ex-wife) the fall before last until early winter this year and right now it is to cold to treat them...luckily they only have the leg mites which are easy to get rid of.

Well if he gets interestd and your can seperate the buck for a couple weeks...you could have kids by july or august.

Another morning with subzero temperatures reaching dangerous levels. I know that I have absolutely no love of winter any more.
I hear ya.

Hello, Everyone! Well, I am finally in the Chicken Owners club...there are 6 beautiful baby chicks (pullets) in a cardboard brooder in my basement. And W.O.W. They are supercute. They grow so fast. They do everything in groups. They all freeze when I slurp my morning coffee. This is going to be an amazing adventure. With a lot of eggs.

My cat is singing the anguished wailing song known as "Huumanwhywon'tyouletmeplaywithwhatevericanheardownstairrrrrrssssssss?"

Welcome!
Back from Boston, Ma. Dad's heart surgery went well. He'll have to hire kids to shovel and he'll be bored watching them, lol. Being a big city, and getting more snow than I could imagine, Boston is struggling with the stuff. I lived in Sault Ste. Marie, where they have the most snow in the country right now but I can tell you it's worse in Boston in terms of where to put the stuff! Cars that got buried by plows are just sitting next to curbs and will be until spring. I've never seen more cars with broken off driver side mirrors. Anyone that parks on a street is just asking to lose their mirror! Sidewalks, like by my daughter's house, have 6 foot banks on either side. City's around Boston make residents shovel sidewalks in front of their house or you get fined! Well it's good to be back and tending animals. Much more relaxing than my grandson, lol! He wore me out.
Glad Dad is doing well. I can't imagine that much snow. Why aren't we shipping it to the west where they have so little moisture and desperately need some? Just a thought...

Ugh, anyone know something easy to find that will soak up water around electric... ? Water to kitchen sink broke, spilling water to basement, directly above main water pump coming into house. Of course everything is shut off now, until its fixed, but want to make sure its good and dry. Thanks
