You might want to look around the Belleville area. there's some decent acreages for sale around there, and some of them with horse barns on them already.

I don't think our older dog is doing all that well tonight, he keeps kinda hacking like he wants to throw up tonight. Starting to wonder if its about his time. Miss Belle would be so sad to loose her grandpa.

sorry about you dog, always hard to loose them but some times they surprise you and last a lot longer then you think

Someone asked about thickness in real maple. It's not thick like corn syrup found in the artificial stuff. The sap is usually stopped at 7degF above boiling (219degF). You can go longer but risk getting a thick goo, and/or crystals. Mine is thinner and my DW lets me know! Oh well. The big producers use viscosity testers to get theirs "just right". I go by eye.

I bought some of your syrup last June, I took it camping and my daughter and grand daughters liked it thin, ....soaked into the pancakes real good, yummy

Hello everyone!

We raised chickens in Arizona but we just moved to Michigan a month ago. We are only renting right now and we intend to buy a house in a year when our lease is up. Are any of you located in the metro Detroit area? I just see suburban area everywhere and I'm worried I won't be able to find a house with enough land for raising animals. My husband works in Dearborn so we need to stay fairly close to there (no farther than Ann Arbor). We also have children so the schools need to be good as well. Any helpful tips???

Hello Lyongirl, & TreeTree, welcome to Michigan and BYC! I'd love to tell you to come to Mount Clemens because I love it here (with the exception of the No Chickens Allowed Ordinance), but it doesn't sound like it would suit your needs. I hope you find something agreeable.

Avoid Garden City for sure. I would leave in a heartbeat of I could. Bad government and bad school system.

Looks like I have a broody. I'm thinking of getting some fertile eggs for her. But then again with this medical stuff going on maybe I shouldn't.

Tomorrow is the heart cath procedure. I have to get up early just to be put to sleep.

Another Michigander reporting in... Saginaw/Freeland area!

We moved back to the country last august. We were going to start with turkeys but decided to pick up 8 barred rocks and 8 dark Cornish chicks by mail. They'll be here the end of april... we're busy building the coop/run area!

You should check out Dexter it has a small town feel but has good schools, close to Ann Arbor, with rural farm land and open spaces but, easy commute. I live out in the country but, I love that I can get to the highways and shopping in 10 minutes but, there are lots of days were I don't leave the farm and there is no highway noise.

I always forget about Dexter. I have family who loves it out there. Busy if you wanna be, and quiet if you don't. Sounds perfect.

Crossword puzzles are finished, first pot of coffee drunk, traps checked, water heating for Granny's tea So this day is off to a good start. Today my thoughts will be on Raz and his medical procedure. Hopefully the outcome won't be as dire as he fears.

Sap still running, should get another 3 days if forecast holds...I only have one tap, might get a cup+ of syrup.
Building out new brooder, it's the bomb! Had panels built for barter, am adding doors, mesh, liner, etc.


Need some BCM and/or Ameraucana and/or Welsummer chicks born within a week of April 4th within 50 miles of Paw Paw.

Mary, I'm glad your girls liked the maple. I made various thickness batches. I prefer it light while my (grown) kids prefer thick like the fake stuff they serve at IHOP.

I read that as "Looks like I'm broody."

I don't know if the heart procedure will help with that! In all serious, hope your "nap" is a good one!
