Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have a hen that is bound and determined to go broody. No matter what I did, she was going to sit in the nest. Even if I "broke" her, she'd go broody again in a week or so. Finally gave up and just let her go broody. Get it over and done with.
we'll have fun visiting and getting to know each other at our Chicken Forum Picnic!

Is anyone here interested in my Golden Sebright Bantam rooster? He's friendly but we just want eggs to eat, so just hens. I live in West Olive (between Holland and Grand Haven, on the west side of the state).

Same here! I was putting more bedding in the temporary tent coop the other day and now have at least 30 bites!
Chickens eat mosquitos, yes? Providing they can catch those little

bloodsuckers.

Cuteness alert...my April babies are starting to roost :)

Three AM mixes and three BLRWs...there are more in the pen but these were too cute!
Cuteness alert-yes!

Due to the potential for highly pathogenic avian influenza, 2015 poultry exhibitions are canceled throughout the state

For immediate release: June 01, 2015
Crud.

my broody breaking has not been so successful I have had one in a cage for 3 days, let her out , she went right back to the nest box another was in for 4 days, same thing. 3 others took the hint and went on with being chickens. the 2 stubborn hens, a Jersey Giant and an Amaricauna are back in the box with a fan on them, hope this does the trick cause I don't need any more chickens

have been trying to get the Chanticleer's to hatch but not real successful
I have another hen sitting on 9 eggs. if push comes to shove I will put some of those under the stubborn broodys but I would rather they went back to laying eggs
(No experience) I've heard of putting frozen water bottles under a broody to cool her temps ? Just a thought.

Funny how MDARD is targeting 4-H, fairs, swaps and backyard flocks with this scare tactic. Thus far no incidence of avian influenza has occurred in Michigan. Ai has hit commercial operations that supposedly have little exposure to outside migratory birds but other vectors haven't been explored.

The closest backyard flock was in Indiana. That flock was 1 of over 4000 flocks tested and the AI strain was different than what has decimated the commercial flocks.

So the options are to listen to Chicken Little that the sky is falling and hide. Or go on with living life the best you can.

Ugh. So, yeah, let me get this straight: HPAI can be carried by migratory wild birds, which means it can go literally everywhere, and has ravaged the commercial flocks in other states, so naturally, the solution is basically to give a dirty look to Michigan backyard chicken keepers. Just...I...grrr.
Aart - I found it through the Michigan small farms council. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdard/Poultry_Quarantine_Final_1_490684_7.pdf?20150602144903

I just find it highly annoying that they keep sending mixed messages. We know chickens and what the dangers are but the general public is (sorry) rather stupid and will believe anything they are told about chickens and the "danger". I don't have tv so I don't know what hype the media is doing but the state has likely just made an impact on how 4-h kids will view AI now and in the future. A lot of good bio security teaching has been tossed aside for fear.

:/sorry for rant!
Don't be sorry. And I just wasted half an hour looking for a great quote (that I can not find) that says something like "A man in logical and intelligent. Many men are prone to panic and stupid."

LMAO...actually it makes me a little sad when people dress up farm animals.
Awww, RaZ's mood lifter backfired!

Welcome to all the new folks! Yes this is a great site.

And I'm off to go wallow in bacteria, aka let the girls out.

Not sure if anyone is local and needs free firewood

I will be home Monday and Tuesday next week for cutting.

Have lots of down trees ready to cut.
You cut and haul away. Lots of ash and hickory.
Bring a few folks to help as you're going to need them.

If interested let me know. These are the only 2 days i have available.

Located in Lapeer

Same here in Gaylord. We have about 15 maples & beech already down and taking another 20-30 in the next few weeks.

Michigan is not the only state that has cancelled all poultry stuff...Ohio just did it yesterday (as has Indiana, W. Virginia & Pennsylvania).
As I never watch the news (literally) & only scan headlines online, after finally reading all the posts here over the last week or so; I decided to google "avian flu outbreak" during my lunch today...
I had not seen any headlines on mainstream media on this. Now, over the last 48 hours, there seems to be alot more articles (The Freep, CNN, etc.) primarily due to the preventative measures (at least I consider them preventative) being taken by some of the states that have yet to see any cases (save the one in Indiana) & for the CDC to pipe in that the risk of humans contracting it is slim to none (unless you work extensively with poultry/been in contact with infected/dead birds).
