Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Yea! Another far northerner! Welcome!

I've had an enormous gartner snake hanging around my chick run the last week. Huge as in two inches around. So last night my DH dug him out of the retaining wall and I rehomed him to another rock pile farther from the chicks. My little polish are finally getting their 'do's and they are adorable.

I am also sick of the broody hens and broken eggs. I have about a dozen grumps right now. Yesterday my son was showing my nephew how three of them were sitting on each other.
We have tons of garter, ring neck, and hog nose snakes near us. Our backyard backs up to state park woods, so there are animals everywhere. So far the only issue we've had is the chickens do not like it when there are multiple crows cawing in the area. I think it makes them nervous.

I still have a bunch of Flemish Giant rabbits (12 weeks old) fore sale. If you ever considered raising rabbits for meat these are a great way to get started. They make great pets as well. PM me, or call 231-828-5609.

I took three to CS and since we had a mini crowd I came home with them. What really surprised me was the usual flock of people that buy up all the extra roos did not even show? Weird right - like they knew it was an off year.

the guys in the hasmet suits must have met them at the gate

I have some questions for those of you selling eggs. Do you need any sort of license? What do you do to prepare them for sale? Do you clean and refrigerate?

Welcome!! you do not need a license. some people do not wash, put a note in the box so they know they should wash them, unwashed eggs do not need refrigeration, I would keep them in the shade if possible, I wash mine, a little vinegar in the water, a clean cloth, and rinse them with warm water, I do not submerge them in water. once washed they should be refrigerated, I keep a couple doz. in a cooler with ice jugs.

my DH has been scraping tar like glue off our basement floor for several months. only in the laundry room (thankfully) the previous owners glued down particle board then put cheep press on tiles over it. of course every thing was full of mold and in bad shape and had to be removed. what fun!!

Yeah our area was hit pretty bad too. A lot of trees down and one house, not too far from us, lost its whole roof (very sad). Fortunately we only lost power for a few hours, no damage this time, Now the storm we had a few weeks ago took

out 4 large oak trees on our property, one of them landing on our camper, which we just bought last year.
wow that stinks, at least it wasn't the house though

as for naming birds. I have some that are and some that are not.
fried,,cordon blue, grilled, or roasted or rosemary & thyme might be good names.

Took the girlfriend with me and Mom today over to her trainers to see the baby horses they had there. good times.

Also talked to our hay supplier tonight. That Twister that hit the Manchester Area was about a quarter mile from his place. thankfully, the most that's messed up at his place is a few buckets missing. Considering that a neighbor of his is dealing with a missing roof, I think that sounds like a pretty good deal.

Just getting started with chickens up near the Straits of Mackinac, and wanted to say hi. I've only got three girls in the backyard, but the kids and I can't wait to get some eggs!

Hi and welcome from the northern Straits

I wash only soiled eggs in warm water. Once washed they must be refrigerated. Once refrigerated eggs must be kept cold until used. Eggs for our consumption are kept unwashed on the counter in a basket - they don't last long though, only a few days.

Just curious if everyone names your chickens? I've had mine about 2 months now, I think I have their personalities figured out. Having a tough time coming up with names. My daughter named my barred rock, Oreo, of course. (Daughter is 24 yrs old, lol) I have 1 red cross who is very unsure, not mean or anything, just likes to hang back and watch everyone else. Suggestions?
My kids (3,5, and 6) each named one of the chickens after themselves. Then we named them after chicken entre's; finger, nugget, wing, crispy, original recipe, and there is even a crispy jr. My 5 year old has convinced the 3 and 6 year old that she can tell them apart by looking into their eyes. They all look alike--there's no telling them apart :)
