Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Mosquitos kind of cycle through at our place. Give it 2 weeks and I'll bet there won't be very many. As usual, make sure you're eliminating any standing/stagnant water you can since those will just be breeding pools for them. There's also something (I think they're called "dunks" or something like that?) that you can put in a bucket of water that will kill the larvae after the females lay their eggs in it.

Anyone else have terrible mosquito issues? Are you doing anything about them? This is the worse I've had mosquitoes ever. Granted this is also my first summer in the new house, but growing up in northern mi we had a lot of mosquitoes and they weren't as bad as this. The moment you stray from the driveway you are literally engulfed in a cloud of the blood sucking little monsters.
They are BAD!!
The last week or two they seemed to have bloomed.
Bathing in repellent is the only preventative that I know.

I noticed this morning they seemed not as bad....but I wasn't out there for long.

I'm kinda glad to hear it's not just me then. I hope they cycle and thin out. Of course more rain around here starting tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. Part of the issue I'm sure is I still have a lot of long grass, and the mower still doesn't wanna play well. The area they're super thick and swarmy in I just cut short yesterday.

Has anyone ever had chicks shipped to the Holland post office? I tried calling them today, but couldn't get a live person on the phone. I'm having chicks come in next week, and I thought I should give them a heads up. Should I go in and let them know?

Might be a good idea to have a friendly face to face, to show them what a great person you are :D so they take extra good care of your package.
I've been wondering how folks ship birds and even eggs when it's so hot.

So, finally, all 3 of one group of pullets have started to lay over the past 4 days...1 from each bird, I assume.
Was surprised that none are Wellie 'coated', tho I suppose that could change as things come into 'tune'.....
........interesting that the 'olive' egg is same shape as hens and I'd guess that it came from the bearded lady.

Background on cross if anyone's interested is here..... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/131131/the-olive-egger-thread/8860#post_15522007

If your county sprays you can ask them to come out & spray your place. I'm lucky, Tuscola County sprays and between that, my ducks & guineas, even living by woods I don't have much of a mosquito problem.
