Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I lost my favourite girl yesterday.....no warning, just came home from visiting a friend and there she was....laying in the coop. I am just gutted, she was such a beautiful girl and one of the first 6 pullets I got. RIP Dollar Bill....such a sweetie

Sad to hear, sorry for your loss. Do you know what happened?

yeah, I'm pretty sad about it.....she was the most gorgeous hen, a penciled rock I got from Wynette last year, she was fine on Saturday, eating and drinking fine although walking a little slow and cautiously, I figured it was the heat.......let them all out to free range at lunchtime and went to visit a friend for a few hours, came home and checked for eggs and she was dead in the coop....looks like she had only been dead a short while, I'm just so sick about it....had my first flock just over a year now and as hard as I try I just take it so personally when one dies. I have been so vigilant with their care, good food, change of water several times a day, fresh fruit and vegetable scraps....ice cubes in the heat and frozen fruit and veg, I just love my birds.

Is it normal for a pullet to lay her first egg then nothing for a few days? One of our EE laid this egg 7/11 but nothing since. Is there anything I can do?

So sorry about your hen, it's such a shock sometimes. Only a necropsy will give you answers, unless there are obvious wounds from a predator, or she flew into a wall and broke her neck. Sorry again. Pullets can be very irregular in laying, especially at first. Patience! Mary

New layers may be somewhat erratic. Different sizes and shapes, they are getting used to the process. It's all good. And remember that not all breeds lay every day even once they start.
