Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Today has been an awful week. I've got someone to watch my flock and herd while I make an unexpected trip to MN. My uncle passed away suddenly. My boyfriend's family is also mourning a loss. One of my two honeybee hives perished as well, they starved despite my feeding them.

I am setting some eggs. Maybe Araucana babies 21 days from now will make things better.

Anyone have any awesome stuff happen? I need to hear positive news.
Bummer.....my condolences Stacy..... hang in there!

I delivered the goat/sheep stand that I designed/built and bartered for homegrown local meat, and also set some eggs in the bator....
......that was my awesome thing(s) of the week.

Not to be a bummer, one of my 2 feather foot babies passed last night. I called FFH and they didn't get Bantams this week. But they got turkeys this week and possibly getting more Bantams next week. I don't know what happened. It just got sleepy and died. I guess 19 out of 20 chicks doing fine is good right? Hope this makes sense no coffee yet....

sorry for the losses,

We are starting our bee keeping hobby this year. I have the hive and ordered bees for May.
Also got a couple of local experienced bee people lined up as mentors.

I am eggcited!!!

I would totally keep bees because I love HONEY. But I am deathly allergic to stings so probably not a good hobby for me.
That would be a good reason not to because at the first class I went to all of the presenters said no matter how good you protect yourself, prepare to be stung.

Still, I plan on asking my doctor for a script for Epi Pens in case a family member discovers they are allergic too.

They also said bee keepers tend to develop an allergy the more times they were stung...interesting I thought.

You can get a variety of bees that are pretty docile though. And since they are out there anyway, if you have the hive far enough away someone else could check on them. They said average time commitment is about 15 minutes per week per hive is usually what is needed during the summer, less frequency in winter months.

I am officially on the lookout for a CCL cockerel or an ameraucana cockerel. Trying to get some thing around 6mo to a year old. Benzie/grand traverse/Leelanau area....but I will also be in Cadillac area on Saturday if someone down there has one.
In one of the Facebook groups I belong to, someone was giving away a CL boy. This was after I purchased mine :) I will look for it and see if someone pounced on that. Not sure if he was "crested" though...

Ok, someone in Petosky has CL boys for sale $10 each.
Cream legbar and lavender orpington roosters
$10Petoskey

We have lots of lavender orpington and cream legbar roosters available. Use the legbars over your brown egg layers to breed your own olive eggers, and they are all from roosters with gentle personalities. Those that don't sell will end up on the table. Ages are anywhere from 2-4 months. Will give discounts for multiple roosters.

With my luck they would hunt me down and sting me anyway lol

There was a sweet old man who raised bees on the South Hill in Rochester for almost 70 years. I used to get my honey there, and I am highly allergic to stings. The first time I went, I pulled up and he was out in his garden. Bees were flying everywhere. He waved me out of the car, I told him I was allergic, and he assured me they wouldn't bother me. He was right. They landed on me, walked all over me, used their antennae to assess me, then went on their way. I just had to make sure I left them all at his house when I got in the car! I went many times after that, and the bees learned that I was not a threat and simply ignored me after a flyby.

I asked him if he'd been stung, he said of course, quite often, but it didn't do any harm.

I think I saw that post....iirc it was fr last year and they only have a couple to get rid of now. Unfortunately for me, petoskey is like 3hr away. Maybe more. Someone in Lansing/Howell offered one but again....4hrs away. I drove across the state to get a BCM from Wynette 2 years ago and my husband was a bit steamed about that. Hahahahhahahhaha. Someone in Tustin (only 90min away) has chicks, but not until the middle of next week and I'm trying to find one that I can start breeding this year.

I am setting Silver Laced Appenzeller Spitzhaubens and some blue project Appenzeller Spitzhaubens today. These are attractive, crested birds and do well free ranging. If interested in obtaining a couple of chicks, please send me a PM. These are shipped eggs from PhoredaBurds and are high quality stock. I am starting with 15 eggs.
