Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Other than a few odd pieces I need for the door and pop door, and a coat of paint on the inside of the plywood, I could be ready to wire up the hoop coop and get the rangers out in the new coop.

WooHoo!!

Didn't get any work done on my hoop coop build yesterday.....
....but got the shade cloth up on the main run and a fan kinda installed in the coop.
They did not like that big noisy thing hanging over the junior roost,
even after I turned it off the juniors roosted on one of the main roosts.
<shrugs> they'll get used to it...and it should really help cool off the coop in the evenings.

One broody hen has one chick hatched out so far. Hoping she gets at least 2 of the 4 to hatch. Other broody is still very mean, but I don't think she was too far behind.....just a few days....for incubation time. Fingers crossed!!!!

If the weather cooperates the garden is going on tomorrow. I have to put up the fence (would be nice to have help but l be waiting another week if I wait for my helper to have time) before I can plant......I have a feeling that's going to be a chore. I feel like I'm 2 weeks behind in getting things planted, but Facebook just reminded me that a few years ago I had to cover up 30 tomato plants because it frosted on May 31st.

Well so far she seems to still be sitting on the eggs. She was off the nest when I got home about 20 min ago. I also found a rogue egg sitting outside of her box. It was not one that I had placed in there.

I got 5 eggs today. I think I may place these for her.

CHICKENSTOCK 2016 UPDATE

Follys Place (Mary) persistently contacted the MSU Extension office to invite a speaker to our event.

Darrin Karcher, MSU Poultry faculty is coming to speak to our group and will begin the presentation promptly at 11am.

I sure hope we can encourage a nice turnout for his presentation

Ran home from work to unload a wagon of hay, then got the inside of the plywood on the coop painted as well. Kinda debating about putting a second coat of paint on it. Might just save that for when I'm done with the Rangers and about to let the layers have it. If I had really been smart about it, I would have used some of the green paint for that first coat then used the blue for a second coat.

Also expecting about 4 wagons of hay tomorrow. Who has some strapping lads for rent for tomorrow night??

Gee. I would love to help but the surgeon has put me a weight lifting limit of 10 pounds. Like that is going to work.
You be careful and take care of your self!!!

good job on the coop

I had a hen seting on eggs yr. and one broke and made a mess, she was also covered with egg, I had to wash her and finally just broke her as she was getting a rash, fron the broken eggs and loss of sticky feathers.

have had to break at least 6 broody hens this summer still have one setting on 7 eggs, she should have chicks soon, good luck with your brood, did you mark the eggs so you can tell if any one adds eggs when you arent looking?

Well I went out to check the broody hen today and found her off the nest, 2 eggs missing, and all the straw pulled out of the nest box. Too bad too, I candled last night and noticed the startings of growth. These eggs were a bit dirty, so it's not a "total loss" and I'm glad I didn't place the other eggs I was planning to add.
I'm going to revisit my setup tonight and see what I can do to improve it.
