Thanks Peep-chicken! I'll get hubs to do it this weekend. We do have a light on for a couple hours each evening cause they are scaredy chickens and won't go in the dark coop, lol. So maybe we won't have to wait too much longer for eggs.

My husband JUST witnessed the first mating attempt so I'm hoping that means the ladies will be producing soon!

Looks like a piece of dimensional lumber....like a 1x12?
Use exterior grade plywood instead, much less likely to warp.

X2. And probably a good idea to seal it with either paint or stain to keep moisture from soaking in.

Squatting is a pretty good indicator of POL. Just remember that the chickens haven't read the rule book. They will lay when they are ready.

Rooster activity is more related to how mature the rooster is sexually, and not the pullets. A sign of their maturity would be allowing the rooster to mate them, as opposed to squawking and struggling.

I am having trouble with my chicken door warping. Now that I have a auto door mechanism it is a problem because the door won't close or open with too much resistance. Does anyone have a recommendation for a different wood or material to use? Thanks

My husband used a large plastic cutting board for our coop pop door. Works great.

Hello Sunshine Mary! Wood warping problems eh? Well, the ticket to stopping that is to seal both sides of wood material you are using with a semi- waterproof product such as paint or wood sealer. Plywood seems to work better than solid wood products such as pine or hard woods. That is because the plies are glued together in thin veneer sheeting. Remember, both sides and edges have to be sealed. Let it dry at room temp and it should last for a long time. My chute doors have been in use for 5 years now and still in great shape. They are all the same age about 21 weeks. My husband said it looked like she submitted but he was watching from the house and couldn't hear them. I went out later and no one is missing feathers but I did see him attempt again and get refused with quite a bit if squawking. I know eggs will come when they come (like human babies, lol) but I just find it all so fascinating! My neighbor keeps us stocked with eggs so we're not really in a rush...just excited!
