I took it down to refill. When I took the fount back out I found a pullet hanging from said chain. She had an entire link caught in her mouth and was hanging several inches above the floor.
Indeed!. They don't teach this stuff in chicken keeping school.Oh brother.
That sounds like it was a dare. Some of the other hens got together and tripled dog dared her to try to eat that chain link.I'm afraid that I have one chicken who is either suicidal or extremely stupid.
The heated water fount is suspended by a chain. I took it down to refill. When I took the fount back out I found a pullet hanging from said chain. She had an entire link caught in her mouth and was hanging several inches above the floor. She had to have jumped up and tied to swallow the chain.
Fortunately, I gathered her up and extracted the chain. Stupid bird is fine. No real harm was done.
And I learned a lesson. NEVER leave anything loose or dangling in the chicken coop. Not even for a minute.
That sounds like it was a dare.
UHG..what is that? Did you post here about it before?kinda hoping that we can take that part off of her soon as well. kinda acts like it would like to come off.
pics of pecks pleaseHello everyone. I am having a hen pecking at the clutch of eggs. I have six hens, and they all lay in the same spot every day, so I don't know which one is doing this. A couple of weeks ago I had the problem, then I put two fake eggs in the nesting spot, and that seemed to help. Now one of the fake eggs was broken, and another real egg was cracked. A few maybe important facts. None of the eggs were eaten, all of the hens are completely free range, they always have access to egg layers pellets, I don't give them oyster shells, and they are all under a year old. Thanks for the advice.
