My scarlet tanager was back again this morning. I haven't seen a female yet. I hope there will be a nesting pair. I haven't seen any activity yet in the phoebe nest. I think they arrive later.

Took advantage of the rain yesterday with a visit to a greenhouse. Picked up a few hostas and this beautiful rose. I just have to fine a nice sunny spot for it. That is the downside of living in the woods. The house is completely shaded but the garage gets sun. The rose will probably go there.

What brand of flock feed do you use? Is it crumbles or pellets?

Not bigmr, but I use Flock Raiser crumbles, I grind it up finer int he blnder for chicks for a week or two.

Another 1/2" of rain last night, so nearly FOUR INCHES total in 24 hours! Nothing we're used to, for sure.

Saw my first hummingbird. And a rose-breasted grosbeak.

I just went out to clean coop and found a hen with a very bad bloody spot on the back of her head other hens have been after her and I don't know why. I have no rooster so it is not rooster abuse. I have her isolated and cleaned the wound with peroxide and put on triple antibiotic. don't have any blue coat. She is in a dog kennel out in the grass now.And gave her some kiefer oat meal and honey then some chicken food with water. plan on keeping her in the coop, in the kennel till she is healed. Any other suggestions?

VERY PRETTY. we have peewee's that have nested under out second story deck for 2 years. I think they are starting their second brood as are the robins on the chicken coop over hang.

Was it the other birds, or did it get injured some other way first?

I have her isolated and cleaned the wound with peroxide and put on triple antibiotic.

Don't use the peroxide again, it's good for first cleansing but can damage new growing tissue....saline is better for subsequent cleanings if needed.
AB ointment is good, bluekote masks the wound so you cant see how it's doing, so no loss there.
Trim the feathers away from edge of wound so they don't get stuck in it.

thanks aart, I'm sure it was the other hens. I have seen them going after a hen lately but when I went out to check, I didn't see any damage. I'll see if I can figure out how to post a pic. haven't done it in a long time..... I only have 18 hens left and they free range from 7 am to dusk when they all head for the coop. so they aren't over crowded. they are singling her out for some reason

not a very good pic. the wound is rather deep in one spot and about the size of a half dollar.

Let me fix that up a bit.

Ouch! Pretty nasty wound.

Is she eating and drinking and pooping OK?
give her a day then start trimming some feathers.
Gonna take a good bit of effort to keep it clean and moist.

Yes eating and drinking and pooping, just a nasty wound. I wish I knew why they are picking on her. not a new hen, been with the group for a couple yrs. hope she isn't sick I have read they will go after a sick hen. she does not act sick though
