Long ago in high school, a classmate was one of NINE girls, and then finally a boy! Her parents did actually do that; MUST have a boy!!! We all thought 'crazy' then too. At least they could afford ten children.

Expected to be a hot day.
Was a weird night. First a loud crackling sound while watching TV. Like crushing a water bottle. Looked everywhere, but couldn't find anything. Looked outside, too. Then around midnight, strange animal noises. Loud. Went outside with a flashlight and broom and looked around. Was afraid it was trying to get my rabbits. Saw nothing. It was in the brush on other side of fence. Couldn't see it but it called out a couple of times. Sounded like it was in distress. Don't know what it was. Never heard it before.
The field was filled with fireflys! It was beautiful.

Not looking forward to the heat, at least the humidity will be low, that really helps.
Was hot yesterday too....got errands run early...gave the chooks a dose of EL.
Bummer is the chicks got trapped where it is not so cool, they usually hang in the coolest place and must have got chased out. One hen seems to be targeting them all of a sudden, they are terrified of her.

Hey, I'm from the u.p. not sure if I'm suppose to start a new thread or just keep going....I live on the family farm. My brother and husband run it now. So I guess I've come full circle. Just a hobby farm now. A few head of beef cattle and my chickens. I have have two coops and three pens. One is three buff silkies and a buff silkie/red sex link mix. the big coop is divided with 3 salmon hens a blue silkie rooster and a white hen and rooster pair. the other side is a menagerie of a salmon pullet, a ayam cemani, possible cockeral, 4 rainbow dixie pullets, 2 olive egger, one americana, a red sex link old lady hen and a red sex link/ buff silkie rooster.
I have been disabled since 2004 and some days it takes everything I have just to want to get out of bed. My chickens give me purpose. It's really a struggle some days, especially when it's a -40 windchill day. But knowing they depend on me keeps me going.
I'm hoping to get to know you all. Denise

Last night, getting ready for bed; a little tree frog on the floor in our walk-in closet! Didn't step on him, fortunately, and sent him outside. I have NO IDEA how he got inside, especially that far from any outside door. Lucky frog, not dried up/ dead today.

I was shocked to see the fireflies out. It was an awesome sight.
Yea, it's really spooky with the animal sounds sometimes. With a little google research, i'm pretty sure it was a raccoon fight. Glad I broke it up! Rabbits were a little spooked. Their hutch is in the chicken run. They're in the run while the chickens are out free ranging. Put them in the hutch after dinner so the chickens can do whatever. Chickens go to bed, the rabbits are free to come out all night. Gives them lots more exercise than locking them up in the hutch. They even come out in the yard in the morning while I do my chores so they eat grass and run around. And dig holes everywhere!
At my old house in Davison, my daughter in law was visiting. She took her little yorkie out to potty and she came running in all flustered. "There's something out there!" She was so scared! There's a elk farm down the road and the elk were doing their mating call! Was pretty funny.

So I am starting into the home stretch with my broody hen. I set the eggs under her on June 5th. From my understanding they take about 21 days to hatch correct? What day so I start the count down. My kids are starting to get excited, so I was wondering when we need to keep a closer eye on them hatching. Thanks for the info.

So 21 days is June 26th. Have you candled them? At night, with a flashlight, check them out if at all possible. Quietly, no noise or excitement (do it yourself!). Any clears need to be gone before they explode out there!

Yes, and do that before the 23rd, the eggs and hen should be undisturbed for the last 3 days.
