Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I grew up in PA. Always had pickled beets & eggs. My mom had a special crock she used just for them. I have that now but its a bit on the small side so I use this antique 8-sided Mr. Peanut glass jar. I have a boat load of antiques that need to be sold. Will have to wait until garage sale season next year.

Got the ducks and orphans placed in the run last night. Need to knock together a small duck house today just for them. I don't want them messing up the big coop. We all know how messy ducks are. I'll work the brooder litter into the compost pile today. About 80 square feet of wet, packed, bedding material to add. One good benefit of ducks, eh?

Goodwill and other thrift stores sometimes have Ball and Kerr jars for a low price. Just something to keep in mind. I second the pressure canner. For my maple syrup I only need to water bath as the sugar content is so high. My friend up north routinely cans salmon and venison. I never have. Pickled beets, sweet pickles, tomatoes, salsa, syrup, dilly beans, peppers - yes.

It’s my first year too!! I have 15 that I ordered directly from Townline  so we went for it! I have 3 of those fancy EEs too!!! And 3 Olive Eggers, 3 Light Brahmas, 3 Welsummers, and 3 Black Sex Links. And no eggs:barnie

I would love to see pictures of your flock! See if they look anything like mine, mine all turned out so different looking (the EEs don’t look alike and the Olive Eggers don’t look alike I mean).

Here are my girls! The barred olive Egger is Deion Sanders...everyone Thought she was a he....nope great olive green eggs. Very lippy but follows me around the yard now!

The white and tan is my Americana - Farrah, she’s my dumb blond and had a prolapsed vent at 6 days old. Guy at the farm store told me to simply snap her neck and move on...not worth the trouble. I did things to that bird I never thought i would to you an animal...but she made it.

Liz is my Plymouth Blue Rock and a tank...

Butterscotch is my pearl star leghorn...she’s the one w the limp... huge eggs

Snow White is my white leghorn...how she lays egg the size she does...it is a miracle from God...

All Townline Girls...next batch i will likely get several of the same kind. Good luck and be patient w your eggs...they’re worth the wait!

wow, this thread has been busy the last couple days:)
Hi, John and welcome to all the newbies.

Raz,I hope your friends from down state bring lots of food!! Have you checked out local church's many of them have food pantry's and free meals

love the new hen and egg pics.

lost a hen yesterday to a pred. not sure what, so they are locked in the run for a week or 2. last week they took my only bantie, this time it was a full size hen, but couldn't carry her away. Almost sure it was a hawk. seeing a lot of them in the area lately.

Thank you for the Introductions!! They are beautiful birds! Maybe I’ll include some of those I don’t have in my next batch!!! And thanks for the encouragement. My impatience is not helping with the wait, but I know it will so very exciting to finally get eggs!

I must say I am loving how chatty and curious the girls are! I added (mostly) clear plastic to the sides of their run this weekend and they followed me around, chatting away, sometimes pecking at the tarp through the hardware cloth. Still have more to do so that it stays warm for the girls but our lights came in and we're testing out the timer to make sure it works.

One of the two SS pullets that i kept is more than pushy at times! She follows me around, along with one of the Buckeyes and one of the Marans, and she also has been actually pecking my boots and once took a hold of my jeans! We've had a couple of chats about that over the top behavior, and she is getting more polite. No way was I sending her home with anyone else!
They are all unhappy about being locked in for now, but another week to go.
I still haven't actually seen any raptors around at the coop area, but don't want to tempt fate either.
Today tried the new electric leaf blower, and love it! Swore I'd never get one, but so much easier to clear leaves off the decks!!! So much for sweeping...
Mary
