Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Oh, @Sally PB , you recently posted about a liquid calcium. After I saw your post, I saw somewhere else, where a gal added oyster shell to her girls' water. Got me to thinking: I use both regular and flaked oyster shell for my girls. They never eat the regular, but the flaked leaves a large percentage of powder at the bottom of their dish. I always hate tossing it. The flaked shell is kind of pricey. So - I added that powder to one of their waterers (they have 3 waterers). They gobbled that water down fast! There's still some powder at the bottom of the waterer, but I'm thinking they got a decent amount. I'll watch their eggs, to make sure I dont see excess calcium deposits. And I'll not do it in the winter, when they aren't laying. I'll keep you posted - or did you buy the liquid?

No, didn't buy the liquid. I'd like to hear about any results you have with your plan.

Right now, I think I have 3 hens laying and the rest are on hiatus. The shells seem to be ok... not great, but not paper thin. When I give them crushed eggshell, that disappears quickly. I have resisted giving them a lot, as I really want them to eat the flaked oyster shell more. Laying is definitely winding down for the season. I'll be buying eggs (WAH!) soon.

I'm curious as to how they will start increasing their calcium at the start of next year's season. Would they eat the OS if they didn't have eggshells...?

The youngest 3 ladies will be 3 next May, the oldest 3 will be 6 in March.
