Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

What's interesting is the speed limit on dirt roads is 55 (unless otherwise posted). While I agree that people travel too fast on dirt roads, it is our responsibility to keep our animals and kids out of it for everyone's safety. I was a passenger in a vehicle that plowed through a flock of pekin ducks that were in the middle of the road just over the top of a hill on a dirt road. We were traveling around 35-40mph which was safe for the condition of the road which was lined on both sides with ancient oak trees and sparsley populated. That was one of the most horrifying experiences of my life and I can still see the vivid images of the poor ducks 15 years later. I'm just grateful I was being driven by someone who knew not to swerve because the trees would've won.

Candled my eggs last night. Took 11 our of the incubator. 5 clears, 6 blood rings.

I left one in there that I'm pretty iffy about, and I couldn't see through the marans eggs well enough to make the call. I've got a 200 lumens flashlight coming that should be here by Tuesday, so hopefully that will help. I'm pretty disappointed. I know shipped eggs are a gamble, and I still have over half of them left, but 10 of the 11 were my blrw eggs.

Soooo....depending on how you look at it, I'm down to my 'extras' for those now.

Are chickens with the mille fleur coloring pretty much ALL bantams? I've seen jubilee orps, which look similar, but holy $$$$! I love the look of the mille fleur, and so does DH, but I'm looking for large fowl.

Anyone around Genoa Twp. (Howell) area know about a case of backyard chickens going to court?
There was a prosecuting attorney at the GAAMPs meeting yesterday with several questions and an apparent agenda of shutting down ALL backyard flocks by using the RTFA against people in the sub-divisions.

The attorney's name is Munson or something like that.

No way!
I need a maid, not a wife!

Handsome critters Theron, congratulations.

I have been making my soap for the last year and really like it. Cheap, works great and smells good. I have even made it with a dried out bar of ivory when I ran out and that still worked great.

Today is our big chicken day. My son is in his dress clothes ready to go. The three things he always forgets is Keel, hackle and vulture hocks - he say hawk hocks.

Have a great day!
Good luck to your son!!

Ugh! I can't imagine how horrifying that must have been.

Ooo. No good! So frustrating. Mine are "legal", but i am a firm believer in at least attempting to feed yourself. i figure that anything that strengthens the food supply is a good thing! I don't really understand why people are so against chickens in suburbia, 3 hens with no rooster are reasonably quiet!?

(Now for all the extras, i understand, but then again, i have always loved birds the best

) I hate to say it, but the # of birds is probably not helping the whole case. You guys who are fighting need to get some profiles and interviews of the 3 bird backyard, and focus on that. AFTER you get that secured, then perhaps you can try to push the #'s once people feel more comfortable with the idea.

It's not the number of birds per se. The agenda of some suburbs is ZERO hens for whatever reason.
Those of fighting the system are trying to maintain the same rights that others have.

Right, but i'm thinking it is a "space" issue or something. I've seen the little coops for the urban setup, and i think they will "sell" you audience better. I don't think this is about chickens per say, but the way they look in the yard.......... Shallow, but most city rules are, are they not? I think that's why they don't like gardens so much either. Too much artistic expression and individuality

I would still spend focus on the cleanness concerns, but also proving their aesthetic value may be beneficial too. ?

Yipee!

I got to meet AMY PT and her husband, kids and two lovely pullets! I felt like they were instantly old friends!
I am going to check on their hens for them this weekend since they live close to me.
This family has a darling backyard coop! I hope Amy will post photos of it when they are done.

One question, is hardware cloth o.k. to keep out raccoons at night? The coop has hardware cloth covered openings and they are very well secured on the edges but this is new to me.
