Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

but she's down to only 2 now, something stole 2 of them......
Awesome! I hope the two she has left hatch and are healthy, robust chicks!

On Friday I intend to use some romas for making stewed tomatoes. I will scald and peel them, then bake them in a large roasting pan until softened. Then it's just a matter of chopping them slightly to release so of the water, then ladling into hot jars with a slotted spoon so that not all of the water goes in. Then on to the water bath. Wanting to eat good sure is a lot of work.
have you tried freezing, or partly freezing the puree?? I read a gaLS POST ON FACEBOOK THAT IT helps separate the layers and makes it easier to pour off the water part. ?? I think it was the Canning Granny's post.

I was wondering how freezing them would work . . . I just pressure canned a batch last weekend (I scored an old Mirro 22 qt. pressure canner in excellent condition for $20 at a garage sale, lol). The previous week my mother and I hot-packed tomatoes, and the weekend before I put up salsa and pasta sauce. Phew! I thought mid-way through the last batch that it would be great if I could freeze them instead.

I have frozen tomato juice to reduce the water and it works quite well. The only reason I don't do it is I never have enough room in my freezers. I am thinking that I may refrigerate the next batch and then rack of the top after it has settled.

I have also frozen tomato sauce after it is cooked down and the works well but again the issue is space.

The 90 lbs of tomatoes I processed today are done. They reduced down to 11 quarts of sauce.

Funny thing about tomatoes, while I always remove the skins I don't mind the seeds in salsa or stewed tomatoes but no way do I want seed in my tomato sauce.

had another chick hatch while I was at work tonight (even though when I called to let DH know I was on my way home he said it hadn't hatched yet??). It's a blue copper marans and has some weird thing hanging off where it absorbs the yolk? It looks like it's drying/scabbing up, but you can see that the other chick has been pecking at it (blood on its beak) and there's blood smeared over a lot of the bottom of the incubator. Went and woke DH up because I was thinking of putting the chick that hatched this morning into the brooder so it would leave the other alone and see if it would make it through the night without getting pecked. DH says it "looks a lot better" and he thinks it's part of the yolk or umbillical cord??? All I know is that my incubator looks like a crime scene. The chick is active and vocal though!

If anyone has experience with this, I have pics. They're a bit graphic. I'm off to run a search in emergencies/injuries anyway.

The red color of any blood/scab is almost too enticing for the other chicks, they will pick at it. Have any blue kote? It is a wound spray, stains a dark blue and also helps protect it as a germicide. More than likely it is just a bit of the tissue that connected the navel to the inner shell of the egg. It should dry up and fall off naturally.

really hoping its just umillical material too! i don't have blu-kote, but i'll pick some up tomorrow. gotta get more feed anyhow. I'm leaving the lights off down there as much as possible andkind of hoping that if they can't SEE it, they'll leave it alone. I've got 5 eggs left I'm hoping will hatch tonight or tomorrow.
