oh ya. I was looking at your response last. Ok Silly , mike and Ike are cute!

LOL, yes they are! Thank you!

I am. We have been going every year. This week we are going to the st louis swap at the producers inc.

I was just in St. Louis this Monday-Wednesday... Didn't realize there was a swap going on there or I might have considered staying longer.

Probably a good thing I didn't though, somehow I always come home with more birds that I intended when I go to swaps...

my humidity dropped in the incubator this morning. Started looking around, and found that one of my sponges in a jar was completely dry (again). I had re-filled it on day 19, and added a sponge that I didn't have to open the lid to access, and have been concentrating on keeping that very moist so the others wouldn't dry out so fast.

So

I opened the incubator.

It was just enough to get the jar out, close it, fill the jar up and get dip the sponge in a glass of water, and then put it back in.

And now I'm horribly worried that I may have shrink-wrapped my uh-hatched peeps. I figured that if I DIDN'T do it, the falling humidity would shrink-wrap them, so I was out of luck either way. Today is day 22 and aside from the 2 that hatched yesterday, nothing is happening. And 2 out of 27 is a really really really bad hatch rate.

I was really hoping to wake up to at least ONE new pip today. Maybe when I get home from taking the oldest boy to the dentist something will be happening......

If none have pipped, then none will be shrink wrapped from the quick opening to refill the water. They dry out fast one the inner membrane is exposed to air, if the humidity drops. But if they haven't externally pipped yet, it is OK to do a quick open.

Ooooh GOOD! As much as I've read about it all, some of these dos/don'ts/whys are still confusing!
So sorry - I hope more chicks hatch for you!!

Look for ways in which to increase humidity without opening the lid for next time - I stick a straw through a vent hole & then squirt water with a syringe on a sponge (or maxi pad) just under the vent hole.

Goats pretty much need a woven wire fence, and a hot wire in addition does not hurt.  Or a full-time goatherder.

Well, I am thinking this plan, and please feel free to shoot it down if it does not work.

I am planning to wean Maybelle for we are not getting any milk at all for she beats me at milking time. :barnie She is 3 months and a week old, so she is old enough to be weaned. I have 2 pastures and a large pen, but am planning to make pasture B bigger, and divide it in half to make pasture B and C. Move Maybelle to pasture A that have 4 strands of wire (Pasture B have 3 strands) and put the goat in with her to keep her company (We can do a trial run like say 2 weeks to see how the goat do.The goat is just a walking distance away, like about less than a half mile away, and I can always walk her back, if it does not work out.) Since the goat will be the only goat, she might befriend Maybelle and roughly the same size too, so she might stick with Maybelle. Hopefully. :fl

Ok, I got the chicks today and they are so so so cute, I have a huge cardboard box that we got a loveseat in and I made that as my brooder.

2 Isa browns were DOA but my box of rainbow pullets all look pretty good, they are just a surprise pack, but I was really hoping once they filled the order they would let me know what they gave me, right now they are so fluffy they are diff. colors, but I can't tell what kind any of them are, cute is all I can tell.

I am taking 20 of them to a friend tonight. So the number will be more manageable after that. My 3yo is in love already, boy were they nice and loud on the drive home. :)

What is this I hear about Guineas eating ticks? does that mean they are all free range, we live in the woods, we love all animals that eat annoying insects :) we need to get our bat houses put up.
