Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good morning HH, and the rest or Michigan! How wonderful was the rain? Boy did we need that. Up here, it has been quite some time since we have had any.

Yesterday my DS came home from school stating he wanted a rabbit. My first question was "Why?" He has a friend who raises them, and showed him pictures of some of them full grown. Among others, he raises California Giants.

Long story short, 2 rabbits are now in a temporary cage in the garage. He found a brand new metal hutch for $30 that he is getting today, and a trip to FFH this morning should satisfy the rest of the bunnies needs. I'll try to post a pic later.

Have a great day all!
No trying to be a lurker but my daughter bought a Netherland Dwarf this summer as a baby. She has potty trained the bunny and takes it for walks on our property with a small animal lead! If the kids take the time with them they can be great pets! :) My daughter had to pay for everything herself and I have found (by intention) that she takes much better care of bun-bun (aka Dawn) because of that :)

Thank you to all for your flea suggestions! All have been noted.

Now I have a new issue... a bigger, sadder issue.
I have had a hawk victim.
She was scalped under her top knot feathers. She is still alive. I am sure she is in shock.
Some would put her down, but I would like to give her a chance.
She is sitting up right and holding her head up. I take all those as good signs.
I smothered the wound in triple antibiotic ointment. And she has her own special, quiet place to stay with food and water.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I DO??
I am, also, going to PM Nova because her Roger got scalped too.

I have no idea if they would eat them but the thought of my boy and girls in the house is scary!

Pretty cool here ... they say 30's tonight. I dug out pants for the first time since spring. Off to a meeting and then farmer's market. I'm taking my winter coat with me.

Oh chilly!

Next time, tell her, "no, black eggs are spoiled, brown ones have just turned ripe."

She has been eating unripe white eggs her whole life...
The problem there is she would spread the word and then there would be a whole new generation of -what is the nice word- UNEDUCATED people
yes I do here it is
So cute! I was wondering if he was a brown chick or a black and yellow chick...
I still don't know. I googled for a long time last night trying to find a picture close to what he looks like.
He is very unique in my book and VERY HANDSOME!

That is a great idea! Do you give chores with allowance?
My son is 3 and I am already trying to figure out what to do so I can have a leg up!

Well I have lost 11 chicks total, it is so sad, but all of them have been the Isa Browns, no other ones and I have at least 5 breeds, I don't know which breeds because they were a surprise pack.

I am hoping the rest will do well. I reported them to teh hatchery and they will refund my money for those lost so far, then I am on my own.

The rest look so good, running around eating drinking, moving about, I scared them and I didn't mean to but oh was it funny to see them scurry about.

So cute and my 6y love to be with them just watching them, he is really good with them and is taking the deaths quite well.

BYFMom - So sorry about your hen! I don't know what to do in that circumstance. I wonder if someone can give you some tips for pain relief for her!

You asked about chores? I put a list of chores on our fridge and the pay for each chore. The first chore I remember the kids could do was refill the liquid soaps in the two bathrooms and I gave them $0.50 when the did that. Whenever the kids needed money they ran to the fridge, did a few chores and I paid them. Sometimes they would ignore the chore list for a week or so. I did not bug them about it. As the kids got older I would make the chores harder and the pay better.

I got the idea when my kids were tiny and I went to a class on parenting and they recommended that we not give allowances but rather that we keep a list out so that our kids could earn money when they were motivated. The idea was to tie effort to pay day.

So rather than Friday being allowance day - any day that my kids chose to do work, they got paid. This has accomplished the goal of creating self motivated workers.

The eggs, larvae and pupae are in the carpet, furniture, bedding, ands other nice cozy places.
What if they are in a place that isn't nice and cozy? We have a bad problem with them in our basement. No carpet, no furniture, no warmth. It's a walk out, but we don't go down there often other than DH to feed his tank of little fish. We don't go out the walk out door or have the windows open, but they are all over down there. How would you treat that area?

Also, we use revolution on our dog and cats and it works really well. We never see fleas on them when we check.

We just had an enjoyable evening at the Swisslane Dairy farm's neighborhood get-together. They had dinner, hayrides to their new robotic barn and some of the best soft-serve ice cream I've ever had. It makes up for the stink we endure, and the tractors and the trucks...

There's some sort of festival every weekend this fall in our area. There's Fallasburg next weekend and then our town has a harvest festival the weekend after and then the wool fest in W. Branch... even though that's like three hours away... I love late summer/fall in Michigan!

well, at some point today, my cuckoo marans cockeral decided to try to integrate himself in with the big girls. It didn't go well. When I went out to shut the coops about 40min ago (SO much going on today!) all the big girls were in, but I could hear a LOT of 'chatter' from the corner area of the chick run. I came back inside, got 2 flashlights, got DH and we went out to see if one of them had hopped over the fence (the GLW has done that a few times recently) or gotten stuck in the tarp I use to keep some shade on the chicks' run and coop. The little guy had gotten himself stuck between the hardware cloth and the chainlink fence that divide the 2 runs.....probably in an attempt to get away from the meanies. He's got a nickel-sized spot on the top of his head where the skin is split, but it doesn't look like they got through his skull. Cleaned the area up, slathered it in neosporin, and put him in isolation in the dog crate on the front porch. He's active and doesn't *seem* to have neurological issues from the few minutes that it took to get him doctored up and settled. Is there anything else we need to do tomorrow? Blu-kote? His BCM girlfriend was sitting on the other side of the fence from him, at 940 at night, waiting for him to go into the coop I'm guessing. I thought that was sweet.
