Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

That is great news chickflick!

I don't believe I told on this thread, but I did find Roger... Looks like a hawk did get him first, and then something else got him later... AND for the record, though its kinda gross, Yes... silkies are black all the way through. Not just skin and bones... but ALL THE WAY THROUGH! Yeah... kinda disturbing... They must be devil chickens disguised as sweet and fluffy cuddle butts...

The consensus here is that the fish is a chinook salmon - so much for not being a salmon! The black mouth and teeth are kind of creepy, they look much better once filleted. Going out tonight for more, honey got me a new toys and reel. Caught them in St. Ignace.

Tap - Girls! Yay! They are so cute, they do everything together. Silkiebators for next spring :D

I like it better than "hobby". What I do on my teensy tiny "farm" is not a hobby. I'm supplementing our food costs by raising as much as I can myself. I grow food for my family and for my chickens and chickens for eggs and meat (someday). It's like the clothesline I built. I didn't build it out of nostalgia. Electric and gas is expensive, dang it!

I should add to my own post that it's not purely cost because, as we all know, chickens aren't necessarily cost effective, but the cost of healthy, humanely raised food... which I think we could agree is the reason behind our passion (if they are not pets). Ugh, this is why I haven't drafted a letter to them yet. Every time I write something down, I realize I've said it wrong or left out major points.

I need to sit down one evening and seriously pour my heart into something because the technical/legal stuff is too much for my right-brainedness. There is little room for an introverted artist in politics.

They look like girls. I don't see streamers like Teri here. Streamers would be boy.
Now when you say streamers are you talking about the way the feathers on his head look all mad scientist like? I have 2 silkies that I'm unsure about so that would help in figuring if they are girl or boy.

I want to thank everyone for their prayers for my former DIL's unborn baby. Pauline went to a Perinatalogist and he said the baby will be fine!!! We are all so thrilled for her!! Keep praying that this baby will be born healthy. Thanks!

fuzzybut, I would be glad to share. I might be that way this weekend unless my friend comes here instead.

While many may not be doing farm work as a 'hobby', that term may be the easiest to define small, family supporting/supplemental income farms apart from large commercial operations. If you're trying to garner support, having easy to remember terms helps.
Plenty of folks turn their hobby work into a extra money, or use it to cut the costs of things. I know many who sew (and have done a little myself) and they hand out their sewn creations as gifts, saving money on the holidays and birthdays. They also save on clothing and bedding costs. I'm testing the waters for turning my Halloween prop making into a small business. I know it's not likely to earn me a livable income, but it can be extra money that I can store away for emergencies.

Farming should be permitted for those who have the ability and the space for it, that includes growing a food garden. If you have the space, the means, and the knowledge to care for animals or raise a garden without causing harm to others, I don't see why it should be denied.

Having the GAAMPS contain a separate policy for small scale 'hobby' farms, farms that support a family or make only supplemental income, appears to be for the best. If you can separate family farms from commercial industry farms, you can create the rules that best suit one without damaging the other.

It frustrates me to see this level of nonsense denying people the right to use their property. I don't approve of HOA's, and never will for that reason.

I have now joined up with the rest of you rabbit owners. We purchased three lionhead does (1 broken black?, 1 otter colored, and 1 fawn?/light brown color) last weekend. They are super friendly and calm. We had a rabbit for 11 years and really missed having one around. Now we are looking for a lionhead buck to purchase and breed them to our does. I'll upload pictures tomorrow.

So my broody Leghorn is still broody. I have been taking her out of the nest every day and she finds her way back there if I leave the coop open. Have been thinking about getting a few chicks to raise. Will she do everything herself or do I have to have a heat lamp set up? I planned on getting some chicks in the spring, but if she wants to be a momma so bad maybe I should let her. Any advice for or against this idea would be appreciated. Also, where is a good place to get chicks from and what breed would you suggest. I need something that's going to get a long well with the other girls and will be for egg laying/pets. Thanks
