... I got down on hands and knees to inspect the webs. So I am crawling along the side of the garage, checking for black widows, not really watching where I am goin, and when I got to the corner of the garage, I met one of my chickens coming the other way. We scared the living crap out of each other! Well, I didn't crap, actually, she might've, I don't know, but she flew straight up in the air, squawking bloody murder! Startled me half to death, I screamed at the top of my lungs and fell over backwards... l

Well, I seem to get a lot of mulch in MY bed, sometimes leaves too. Both girl dogs sleep with me so I have a brown bed spread.
I find all sorts of weird sticks and leaves in mine too...darn dogs. my dogs sneak up while I am asleep- until I wake up and cant move.

Maybe if I have a really good weekend at work DH will consent to a hot-wire around the chicken runs. See the outline of the coops in the background? Yep. Varmints. Super. Oh, and the neighbors' cat has started hanging out back here too.

I STILL haven't gotten any eggs from my ladies yet. They are 22.5 and 20.5 weeks old now. I check daily to see if they've left me a present, but so far I haven't gotten anything. The barred rocks and wyandottes have looked ready for a few weeks now comb-color-wise. I don't know about the squatting or anything, but they LOOK ready.

I'm cleaning out the small coop today in preparation for the chicks, and cleaning out the brooder as well since I put my eggs in lockdown yesterday, and BIL put his in lockdown this morning. I could have up to 20 little chicks hatching out here starting Thursday!

Menards has a double ladder stand on sale this week, so DH and I bought one so that the kids can sit out with us when we get the opportunity. Last year we used a ground blind, but it got blown around a lot (and spooked the deer some).

Welcome to all our newbies!
Whats in the first picture?

I'm planning on heading over to the Fowl Fest in Birch Run that is coming up in a few weeks. Do any of you attend that or show birds there so I can keep a look out for them? Also - are there any other poultry shows in Michigan other than the Spring and Fall Fowl Fests? I'd like to attend more shows but they are always too far away. http://www.fowlfest.org/
I will be going, I can't wait. I would have loved to put some birds in the show but my Icelandics are to young. The show is this Saturday the 6th.

I have had a couple pests around for the last couple months and let it go. But today after watching her run into a chicken, refuse to be scared of me and hoarding food, that it was enough and time to get rid of her. So with tears for the cute little furry critter....

Notice Buzz had to keep tabs on what was happening
Love the croc's! I have many pairs for my chicken romping. I have a winter pair that I really love. I actually hate chipmunks, they get into my bird feeders and tear everything up.

Well my son lost another JG to god knows what, this time half her head was gone when he came home yesterday. She didn't have anything wrong with her in the morning. Could she have been picked on to death? Four JG pullets and one roo were added to a flock, the roo and three pullets are gone in the last two months. They are alright then in the morning my son notices that they are listless and by the night they are gone except this last bird she was fine in the morning.

My daughter is having her baby on the 19th by c-section because she has a heart condition, I am nervous about it.

I was just cleaning my .22 Phoenix. It's only a 3" barrel but still accurate enough. I shot a fish with it.
Hunting protocol, Nova.
The higher the animal is in the food chain, the better you should dress. Chippies = jeans. Coyotes = Sunday dress. Bear = evening gown or tux.

I don't enjoy hunting too much anymore but protecting chickens is another thing. I certainly hope a bear doesn't try to get them. And if I had an evening gown on and even a raccoon showed up I wouldn't let it stop me from going after him. Clothes or chickens - chickens win every time!
Did this help? Is it caused by damp and rocks, then?
That sounds like an awsome system!

This little one is adorable. Makes me want to hatch some! I do have a broody button quail so maybe quail babies next week.

The wood chips has helped with the mud. It's too soon to tell on the bumblefoot since it has only been a week. I can't see how it can be worse than rock hard clay and dirt and then puddles when it rains.

I shared this story elsewhere, but seeing as I haven't really posted anything funny lately...

Funny thing happened the other day when I got a few pumpkins for the birds. I have this HUGE bowie knife that I use to do the cutting. There is a Buddhist temple down the road and pair of monks were walking past the house on their daily walk. I had this knife in my hand, a bunch of chickens were just standing around waiting. I am looking down at the birds, the birds are looking up and me, and then I look up and see the monks staring at me in horror! It was hilarious. I took a pumpkin out of the back seat, set it on the ground and proceeded to cut it up. LOL, priceless.

Nothing like scaring the neighbors!

Lots of rain in the night and very foggy this morning. It will be a nice change to stay in the house today. I think it's been a week since I have worked in the house and you can tell just looking at it.
