Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Thanks for all the suggestions for lining the nest boxes. It's always the pointy end of the egg... I assume that end comes out first? So I know they are breaking when they plop out. I have 2 nest boxes and only 2 hens laying so I know it's not an overcrowding issue!

I would Love to see pics of your Faverolles SillyChicken

lol, no you wouldn't..... the girls are half bald from all the rooster affections and the roos are molting..... it's a pathetic sight really!

heres an older pict when they've seen - better days! LOL!

Got a date set to take the fav, silkie, uggo and I may just take the sumatra roos too, to the yakladys place to process. If anyone want's one, let me know now!!!

I guess I'll be finding out this evening if romaine lettuce makes a decent substitute for cabbage in a recipe. I wanted to make polish sausage stew for dinner, but after I cut everything up and had it in the crockpot, realized I forgot to buy cabbage yesterday. I love fall, it is perfect soup and stew weather. It is so nice to chop everything up, mix in the spices, and toss it all in the crockpot to cook on low all day.

I don't think romaine would hold up in a crock pot, turns to mush when cooked. Just my two bits.

Anybody know how to get ducks to go up a ramp? I have never tried, but according to local ordinances all pens must be 2 feet off ground. I wonder if it is just a duck house and not a pen if it still needs to be 2 feet up? I also states fowl can be loose on my property in the animals at large section. I may just need to call the city for clarification. What do you think? I have 2/3 of an acre and planned on fencing most of it.

However, any such domestic animal may be led about outside the premises of the owner thereof on a suitable leash, in the immediate control of a competent person.

I imagine if you made a ramp wide enough so they could see all sides, with a gradual slope, that the ducks would use it. (feed them at the top) maybe sandy traction strips, instead of raised wood strips would make it easier to get traction, since they don't lift their feet like chickens do. But then again, I imagine lots of things... lol!

it won't have that same tangy bite the cabbage lends... plus it'll turn to mush right quick!
