Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Out of 30 chickens, I got three eggs today!! 5 broodies and the rest are molting!! Gonna have to tell the kids they're gonna have to buy eggs from the supermarket!!

Turned out to be a decent day. Not too cold and actually nice when the sun was out. No rain.
Well Hi again Chickflick I am getting about a half dozen of eggs a day you could always make a trip here and buy some off me or bring your own cartons and you can have them 1.50 a dozen its up to you they have been laying great ever since we set the light timers in the coop. BTW Ben and Jerry are doing Great:)

Is it the time of year? I have 8 hens and I am tired of collecting 2 eggs a day, but it sounds like my numbers aren't that bad??

Weird, I may resort to a light some of the time when it gets a bit darker, but for now I will wait and see.

Tried to breed a doe yesterday, we will see if that takes our first time and all. We are raising rabbits for meat, found a guy who will butcher them for us in exchange for the hides, it's the perfect agreement if you ask me.

So much warmer than yesterday, so I am happy, I even heard a predicted 70 degree day for later this week, wooohoooo

Those Salmon Favs are just gorgeous, everytime I see another pretty bird, I add it to my list :)

QUESTION: What was the last thing you made using your eggs?

I just made a delicious breakfast sandwich, yum

Wish us luck tomorrow, Gino goes in for his TPLO surgery on his leg.

Poor boy... he is going to need some really yummy "good boy/busy" treats too!

I love the compressed rawhide bones for my big dog...It takes him a week or two to finish a 8in bone instead of him gulping it right down!

I made scrambled eggs for my chickies... BUT....

I made some pancake cups a few weeks ago that were pretty good...

1 cup flour
1 cup milk
3-4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
3 tbs melted butter
Mix it all together really good and scoop it in to muffin/cupcake pan
fill them to 1/3
Bake at 400* for 15 min or until golden brown

I put raspberry preserves on them Mmmmmm!

Well I did not want to mention this but we actually had a little snow on Saturday - was trying not to remember that happened, but I guess it is a sign of things to come.

Anyone else been missing the smilies and other stuff up above the reply box? Haven't seen it for a few days.

well. just shoveled out the small coop. it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be! when we built it we made sure it was high enough that a wheelbarrow would come to just below the door, and put a removable kick-board in so we could just pull the board out and shovel or sweep all the bedding into the wheelbarrow. it would work better if we hadn't had to put cement blocks across the back (the only thing we had on-hand at the time) to keep the dogs from obsessing and fence-chasing the chickens when they would go under the coop during hot days. that 8in gap managed to catch quite a few shavings.

Now, the floor of the coop has some DE and what is probably powdered up poop on it. Do I need to sweep/wash all of that out as well, or can I put the new shavings over that when we move the chicks out there?

AND, my big girls are still chasing my marans around, not letting them out of the coop, etc 3.5wks after their being combined (and 2mo of shared fence time before that). Is this normal? Is it because the marans (the cuckoo especially) are still smaller? Just because they're still new? No on is laying yet either. And they're 21 and 23wks old now. BIL's chickens are giving him 2 eggs/day right now and his came in the same shipment as ours.

I would LOVE to get those Araucanas, but I don't have a spot for 2 fully-grown hens.

Still looking from some 6wk or younger EEs or Ameraucanas though.......

Large fowl Araucanas are on the smaller side of large fowl. These two girls weigh about 3lbs. My black copper marans hens are huge fatties compared to the light and agile Araucanas! They're not bantams, since banty Araucanas are even tinier, about 1.5lbs. Just trying to tempt you, hah!

Well let me clarify. We have to use the smaller coop for the chicks (they'll go out in about a month) and the big girls are in the big coop. We have the grow-out coop, but it's not very draft-free or insulated in any way, doesn't have a door, etc. So I literally don't have a place to put them. I'd consider putting them in with the big girls, but given that they are STILL bullying the marans, I can only imagine what they'd do to a couple of even SMALLER ladies!

I'm plenty tempted!
