Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Before we put vinyl siding on our garage, the chickens pecked about half the peeling paint off there. I think it was new enough not to be lead based though. They still take a few tentative pecks at the vinyl siding and seem disappointed that they aren't getting a snack.

I don't mean to be an alarmist here, but lead-based stuff is still around in some way, shape or form. If you think you have it in your yard, then there are soil tests available to determine the levels. Same holds true for ridding your home of potential lead toxicity. If you are concerned about your house and yard, then get the tests before reacting. Then follow the remediation procedures.

My house was built in 1952 and I had concerns. Tests showed that lead was not an issue here. A second test showed that asbestos was a bigger concern, but only if I started a major exterior renovation that created a lot of dust. The hole I put in the wall for my wood stove was barely a blip.

The United States government'sConsumer Product Safety Commissionbanned lead paint in 1977. In an announcement dated September 2, 1977, "The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has culminated a major regulatory proceeding by issuing a final ban on lead-containing paint and on toys and furniture coated with such paint. This action was taken to reduce the risk of lead poisoning in children who may ingest paint chips or peelings."

So, did anyone else see the snow flakes around here? My daughter pointed them out earlier when we were out. It was just a few, but I couldn't deny them.

Silly, I don't know what that was in the x-ray, but I hope everything works out okay.

Since this is Happy Hump Day, I was trying to avoid any negativity. And here you go with the s-word profanity.

I got my mower deck cable repaired (without cussing) and I mowed the lawn...well, mulched the leaves. While doing that, white chunks of frozen moisture started to fall.

It had to be hail. Of course it was hail. It could not be that other thing because it never snows in De Nile!

Found myself wide awake and ready to start the day until I looked at the clock. At 3am there are just too many hours til sunrise. Laid back down and logged 3 more hours of sleep before getting up. Hope was out of the coffee creamer so off to Meijers but only after scraping the hard frost from my windshield.

Now I can sit here with my coffee and try to decide what I will do today. Yesterday I thought that I might be headed to St Joseph Mercy Hospital with Granny for testing. She was one of the lucky people to have received a possibly contaminated steroid shot in her back. However, since she feels good and has no syptoms that advised we just keep a close eye on her. I checked with additional doctors to be sure that we were taking the right course of action and discovered that the test for meningtis is a lumbar puncture and they won't perform that on someone without symptoms.

Since Granny was dressed for travel I decided to take her to hopefully see salmon traveling through the fish ladders. At the Brenke fish ladder at the North Lansing Dam we didn't see any fish but found the the water level was much higher than it had be in a long time. At the South Lansing Dam at Moore's Park we did see several fish trying to jump the dam so evidently fish are traversing the ladders. With the recent rain I would expect many more fish to be in the river

I couldn't sleep this morning either so I got up with my husband at 5:30 - usually unheard of for me. He thought I was crazy because I couldn't sleep thinking about my crazy notion of developing mottled silkies using the mottled cochins in my incubator. My mind was going around and around trying to figure out the genetics and numbers of generations in my head at 4 am. Something it apparently is not capable of doing at that hour. I scared him at the breakfast table when I mentioned that it would be cool to buy a property with horse stalls to keep chickens in. Because of my horrible allergies, he is in charge of cleaning our coop and I doubt he would want to clean multiple stalls for me! I ended up getting some of my Chickadee & Me sewing done before the kiddos woke up. I promised I would stock my shop on the 21st and with this next weekend spent at the Fowl Fest I am going to be hard pressed to get everything done.
