Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have a question for all of us Michiganders out there. Where can I find Tylan? I do not have any sick birds, but I would like to have some on hand, just in case. I went to TSC the other day since our other feed mills closed and asked if they had it. The person I asked looked at me funny. I then said it was a poultry medication. He said he had never heard of it. Any other suggestions or do they actually have it and he just didn't know what it was?

Thanks!!!

Silly... you are silly... hehe.

Chicken Grandma... I have some Roger off-spring in the next several photos...

Also Theron, I have the pullet and cockerel pictures too. Thought you might like to see how the cockerel looks... Fritz the Jerk is his name....

Carmel and Roger Jr. Who would have though, a black with gold leakage, and a white hen would produce a Carmel? She's got blue in her. Roger Jr. is starting to get white in his wings! He also has a lot of red in his face and ears.

Skatter and her chicklets.

Blackie, the hen, and Fibber and Molly

Fritz the Jerk and Fibber

Blackie the Serema

The trio... ALL three are full siblings, along with the black one below.

And all four silkies with Skeeter. She lives with the silkies.

They do have it at TSC you need to look over by the cow/pig medicine. They have it in liquid, Tylan 50. Some store will carry the powder form also, but it is much more expensive. Other wise you can also get it at Family, Farm and Home.

Question
I am tired of feeding birds that aren't laying any eggs. Should I get rid of them? like sell them, they are about 8mo old and I am not sure who is laying and who isn't but I know my EEs are not laying, they have laid maybe 4 eggs for me in the month they have been here. I think they are pretty, but I bought them for there pretty eggs, not just to look at them.

What would you guys do? I alos have a SLW and my suspicions are that only my 3 Isa Browns are laying, how can I tell for sure though?

Well, this time of year, production is going to go down... There are a couple of things you can do to get egg production back up, but note, you will wear the bird out faster...

1) Add light. Either set a light on a timer to come on at 4:30 in the morning.
2) Add heat along with that light, and be sure to have a back up powersource to continue to run the supplemental heat should you have a power failure. Also, since you add heat, be sure the ventilation is adequate since condensation will build more...

May be that your birds are laying, but laying in a location as yet to be discovered by you. Example, I found a clutch of eggs behind my air compressor and brooder box in the garage. I didn't even know they could get back in such a tight space, but they did. If I wasn't moving the brooder, I wouldn't have found them, and who knows how many would have been in the clutch before I did... EW, it could have gotten BAD.

I found eggs in a wall cabinet also, I left the cupboard door open, and sure enough... one found the spot, and several followed... Go Chickens!

Well, I guess I will look in all the nooks and crannys, I thought I had, but maybe I need a flashlight. I might try the light, but I don't want them to get used to a heat source, I need my birds hardy :)
Thanks, I will try most things at lest once ;)

Yep, that would be the "crazy eye"! She looks like she really wants to be a momma, how cute :)

Unless you have some major issues, 8 mo is pretty young to be "done" laying! Idk about the others but EE's don't usually lay in the winter, that is the time their body rests. That's why EE's usually lay for more years, an hen is born with a set amount of eggs she can lay. The quicker they lay them, the quicker done! Also, if anyone is molting they won't lay or will lay very skimpily. That is because the protein that usually goes into making eggs is now going to making feathers! So light if you NEED eggs and they are not molting, otherwise supplement them a little to help them feather in nicely and do the wait-and-see.
