Do any of you guys heat your coops in the winter? I did not last year and just got a heated waterer, but now that I have the frizzled serama roo, I wonder if I should. If so, I'd want something that only turns on when it gets below freezing temps and then turns off again when a certain temp is reached. Any ideas on how I would accomplish that, rather than just plugging in a lamp that is constantly on? Nope, no heat here, even in da UP. They have their feathers for insulation! In fact, they rarely seem bothered by the cold, they only dislike it when it is windy or actively snowing. Other than that, they are out and about, even on very bitter days. Their coop is dry and draft free, though.

I also don't have a water heater. I give them water in black rubber pans, which I can kick in the morning to break up the ice. I found on most days, except for the absolute coldest, the water doesn't completely freeze. Usually, a thin crust of ice forms on the water surface, and insulates the rest from freezing. Once I break up the ice in the morning, they're frequent drinking forms a little ice fishing hole, so they don't go without.

Nice name, and very sweet face. I would love to put my fingers into the coat of an Angora goat to find out what it feels like.

Do you have any homemade ideas for an automatic opening/closing door? Have you come across any affordable to make plans perhaps?

I you set an alarm for him. If he is anything like mine they never wake until 2 hours after I do.

Adorable...I have Angora goats and I love them. You will need to protect them from getting too cold this winter by keeping them out of the rain, sleet and snow. They are suseptible to hypothermia through the spine, barber pole worm and lice but it is easily managed. Two great books are Raising Goats the Northern Way by Susan Black Drummond from Fremont MI and Angora Goat Disease Management
