LMC, I'm so sorry. That must be very frustrating. I know illness is bound to happen at some point with my flock, and I know that I will be an absolute nutcase if/when that happens. Thanks in advance to everyone for being so helpful toward one another on here. I hope everything works out for you, LCM, and hope your flock gets well soon.

Opa, I'm sorry, but I have to ask a totally unrelated question based on your last post. We inherited a few apple trees with this farm, and we don't know what to do with them. One is a very big apple tree (taller than my garage), and three are small (about 6'). The apples that they produced this year were decent enough to give to the critters, but not much good for human consumption. We gathered them all up and stored them in feed bags. We put about 20-30 of them into a separate feed bag and my son and I have fun stomping on them to crush them up. Then we throw it out to the critters as a treat. I know if we do something with these trees we might actually be able to use the apples for ourselves next year. How do I learn what to do?

Yak Lady, there are many fine books on pruning fruit trees and even old trees will benefit from pruning resulting in a much better apple. You can have too many apples on a tree and it will result in poor quality apples. If I were your age I would be planting trees and you will have many years of delicious fruit I've had these trees for thirty years and its been wonderful. They do require care though; pruning and spraying if you want a quality result.

Look for Crazy Chicken Fever and I. I'll have a jean jacket that on the back says "HARD ROCK CAFE LAS VEGAS" Dont be shy, come up and introduce yourself. You'll probably find us near the sales area on saturday morning/early afternoon. Plus a bunch of people from BYC are meeting up at the food court around 12-12:30.

Heres that thread to keep you posted.

Wanted to share a couple young farmers with you all. LOL I had my grand babies for the day. We had a riot playing with the chickens and Ive never eaten 10 times in one day before. Gosh I wonder where they put all that food. I told Alex to dump out his boots as I knew he was hiding food in there as he ate some much.

Great photo—kids are cute! We have a grandson Alex, too, but he is not a "chicken man". His little sister Natalie is our chicken tamer.

We'll look for you there, you can look for us too—2 gimpy old fogeys; here's a picture of ChickenDad (leave off antlers):

We will have fertile blue eggs later this winter when we divvy up into breeding pens. We will have silver and wheaten ameraucana eggs, also BLRW and bantam cochins.

Hey, Oopsy.... Any spirits tonight? Just finished a Petron Cafe in a snifter while watching "So You Think You Can Dance" and wishing I could still move like that (I'm half Turkish and used to be a belly dancer). Now I collect chickens. And sheep. And ducks. And Yak. And I just got through plucking hairs out of my dog's ears. Hehehe-funny thing is, I wouldn't trade it for the world. And I'm so jealous of all of you who are going to Ohio this weekend. I would have no idea what to do there, or what to look for, but I would have so much fun just oooooh-ing and ahhhhh-ing. You guys have fun!

Oh, yeah... and Opa, thank you. Sorry I bugged you about the trees. I'll get a book. Another one. I just got a book about sheep, called...... drumroll, please...... "The Sheep Book". I've had time to read like 3 pages of it. But you're right, I need to take time to learn about things that I want to do correctly. I have plenty of time. Thanks for reminding me.

YL, I would never consider you or anyone asking a question a bother. I don't make any claims to know alot but I have lived alot and learned a few things. Many of the things I've learned have been by making mistakes. Hopefully my sharing will keep others from making the same mistakes.
