Hey there, MJ. The sussex babies are doing great—7 of them. The eighth chick (pullet, wouldn't ya know) appears to be blind. She also has a neuro defect of some sort-I think one of the big girls pecked her on the head when the big girl jumped into their pen before we got the top cover set up. I've been supplementing with egg, cheese, yogurt and vitamins. She seems a bit better. I may try some prednisone. Oh-I think 5 are pullets, 3 roos!

We are going to Columbus tomorrow to the Ohio National Show. Gonna buy me a Christmas present! Who'd a thunk a few years back I would want chickens for Christmas! (Well, except for chicken with rice. . . ) Chickendad will probably get chickens for Christmas, too!

Morning all were is everyone? This frost must have them still in bed.

Egg production at my house has not lowered. I still have 2 to 3 dozen eggs a day. I lost the guy buying what I had left at the end of the week so I started donationing to the local food pantry. I am hoping to get some baby cochins this coming spring.

When do some of you start your incubators in the spring I would like to have some of my own babies at least try. I also want to find a incubator that I can use with the FFA kids and have them sell so that they can make some money for their group. Has anyone used the kerosne incubators that the amish had used before I was at an auction that had some.

Good morning everyone!! Sure is a cold one today.
Wish I was going to Columbus, that sounds so exciting. I still have never made it to a poultry show. The closest I have gotten was at the fair. Even then I couldn't stay out of the barns.

I will be setting wellsummer eggs tomorrow that I am getting from Vicki.

I am so excited. I probably will throw in some of my eggs just for fun. This will be the second time using my incubator. Already trying to decide what will be next.
Hope everyone has a great day!!

Randi, I do the same thing, I let them take a rest in the winter, though i do add light from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. then its lights out.

I heard that respiratory is bad this fall for Poultry, some of it due to the weather changing so much up and down temps, and the molds being high is certain areas
i have been putting in Electrolytes in their water for the last week, just to give them that extra little boost.

If any one lives in the Novi area, I will be at the Bed Bath and Beyond every Saturday from 12:00 to 4:00 until Christmas, I'm doing Keurig Coffee maker Demo, pop in I will be giving out free sample of there coffee. I just love there machine, this is my 3 winter doing this, they give me the top of the line coffee maker every year to keep, and samples of there coffee,

off the scroll through the rest of the forum and off to do chores

Afternoon! What a pretty day out. Gotta love that sunshine! Getting prepared for my oldest daughter's birthday party tomorrow. Making a cake right now. Her birthday is actually the 15th, but nobody is around on that day! Poor kid! So her daddy doesn't get to stay at deer camp anymore. He thinks she's worth not going to deer camp, though. He still goes out during the day to hunt. She was due the first week of December, but was three weeks early (still considered full term). Who would have thought she would have been born on that day! Those little angels do grow fast!

What a beautiful day today. Suppose to be 56 tomorrow and 62 on Saturday. Wooo Wooo!!

I spent the day getting the chicken yard up on my grainery building. So ez to use kennel panels instead of welded wire. Went up so quick. Have a lot of finishing touches on the barn to do yet. Pop doors, trim, paint, 4 seperate runs for my different breeds and a few things inside then its completely done.

Hope you all enjoyed your day as I did mine?

and hi everyone! We've been busy tending to winter stuff. Hopefully, we will be all caught up soon.

Opa... I'm not sure if your welsummer girls are laying yet, but one of mine has been hunting around in our pines for a place to lay. I've been watching her closely this week, and hope she goes in the coop so I don't have to climb thru a 100 foot round pine tree that she has taken a special interest in. Silly girl.

Thanks CCF,

If you look across the bottom from left to right...there are 3 10 foot gate panels there. (the pen is 30' wide and 34' long.) And on the right side up by the barn door there is another gate there but no hole cut as that now inside is where the Isa babies are.. So I will use welded wire and T posts and make 4 seperate pens to come out of each door that is already cut on the barn and put pop doors on hinges on them and close off the other holes that I wont use. My poor cochins are getting depressed being locked up for the last 2 wks. So they will get to go out tomorrow. JR. will be so happy.

Oopsy!!!!! Nice set-up. If/when you come over with the grandbabies, maybe you can give me some pointers on how to improve mine. I already know that come Spring, I'm going to want an incubator, and I'm going to start doing what I said I'd never do.

Opa: I believe in eating leftovers, too. Thing is, I've got my boys (hubby included) totally spoiled. I'm pretty good at using leftovers to create something new so that they never know they're eating leftovers. Every now and then, though, there's just nothing more that can be done with it. I grew red and green cabbage in the garden this year, and made coleslaw out of both kinds of cabbage, with a little vidalia onion and poppy seed dressing. Then I froze it in quart size bags. The boys didn't like it, even before it was frozen. They said the poppy seed dressing made it too girly. I loved it, but I can't eat several gallons alone. So my 'girlies' are finishing it off for me. Same with the pasta salad. It was one of the many things I did with all the darn Summer squash and zuchinni that I grew. Made pasta salad with it and froze it. Boys didn't like it.

Chickens do, though.

HillBillyRoo: I'm too new on here to be missed when I'm not posting, but hey.... it's nice to pretend that I'm one of the ones you miss when you say... "Where the heck are ya'!" So I'll answer. I was cooking, mommy-ing, and critter-ing all day. I had a beautiful sourdough starter that I began a couple of weeks ago. I made a sourdough sponge yesterday, and was eager to make a loaf today. So I did. Yesterday, I made a GORGEOUS 2 loaves of rye bread using a whole wheat sourdough starter and sprouted rye berries. OMG!!!!! Hubby took a bite last night, and asked me to marry him all over again. Then he asked me to make him corned beef today. So I did. My lil' boy had early release today, so I took him in to get the H1N1 shot at his doctor's office (they finally had it available). Then we went to Whole Foods and picked up some carrots, cabbage and onions (and some goat's milk for me). We came home, I made my sourdough bread so that hubby had his rye bread AND sourdough to go with his corned beef dinner. And Lil' Guy and me went and played with the sheep and chickens til Dad got home. Lil' Guy was quite pleased, because one of the hens allowed him to pick her up.

Only 3 eggs today, and no duck eggs yet.

We just gave the yaks a big, round bale of second cutting hay and they are LOVIN' it. I gave some to my sheep, and they're thinking it's pretty awesome, too. Wish my hubby was that easy to please. It's a heck of alot quicker to throw some hay out there than to bake bread and cook a meal all day, and the gratitude is the same. Hehehe! J/K.... I love cooking for my boys.
