If I happen to find some, I'll be sure and let my "slightly older young man" friend know, too.

Good morning folks. Another sunrise has come and this one hasn't brought much in the way of heat. It's currently 36 degrees with a predicted high of only 48. This sure is weather condusive to the sprouting of morels. I need to go out and check on the birds and see how the chicks have faired. Hopefully the temperture hasn't dropped too much in the coop.

This stupid cold has kept me up most of the night coughing and when it would abate somewhat I I would be on the edge of sleep, Granny would start coughing. I haven't spoken with her yet this morning but I don't think she had a very good night.

Well I see Hope's dad is out back loading firewood so I guess my day has officially started. Off to get busy.

Good morning, everyone!

Hope those of you feeling down get better quick.

Since most of you here only want pullets, I thought I'd offer these here...
I have 2 HATCHERY STOCK Spangled Russian Orloff pullets for sale. They're 4 weeks old, Mareks vaccinated by the hatchery. I'll be taking them to the Imlay City swap if I don't sell them before then. Just pm me if interested.

Have a great weekend everyone! As usual, I'm sitting by the hatcher.

Well it didn't take long to get his truck loaded with wood and send him on his way. He's going to come back with his big trailer. I don't understand why he didn't bring it in the first place. I had told him that there was at least 10 cords and now that I'm getting it cut up I think it may be closer to twelve.

The temp is 61 in the brooder cages and chicks are all running around like crazy so I guess they have faired quite well. Does anyone need any bantam hens that are laying? I have 1 gold seabright, 1 pyncheion, and 2 red pyle OEGBs that I will sell cheap. I need to move some birds around and it doesn't make sense to have a pair of bantam orpington in an 8x8' run. I'd like to put them where I know have the 4 bantam hens.

I have another coon in the live trap that will soon be joining its partner. I hate killing them but they shouldn't have tried getting into my birds. My oldest son gave be a fence charger that is a weed burner. It put out a strong enough jolt to actually burn any grass that should grow up against it. I'm afraid of what it might do if the chickens touch it so I don't want to use it on my current fencing. I think what I will do is run a perimeter wire around all the coops and runs as a first defense against predators. I still will use the existing fencing and charger. It may be over kill but I don't intend to allow raccoons and their buddies to feed on my birds.

Opa -- we have a big weed burning unit for the horses and we've all been shocked at one time or another by it. It hurts and hurts good, but I don't think it'd put a chicken down. I had a boarder who was trying to fix something and forgot to turn it off first, she got her pinky stuck in between the fence line and got shocked a few times and it really just left a small red mark on her pinky finger. Of course safe, rather than sorry, is a good policy. Your idea sounds great, too.

I need to go out and check on my chicks in the coop. DH checked on them late last night to make sure they weren't piling up and he said they were all spread out normally and hopping around so hopefully the temp didn't get too cold for them. The wind was terrible.

Briana!
I didnt see your message until just now

I went to tractor supply and picked up EIGHT bantams (because I am pathetic and have no willpower and I had no husband supervision and I couldnt decide)..I have no idea what kind I got. Not one employee there knew what kind of banties they are- the ones who wagered a guess said, "straight run"..

I got a couple chipmunks, a few yellow and grey with feathered legs, and a solid reddish brown one, and two black ones with brown faces.

I stuck them under my Turken and she started making chuck-chuck sounds and I left her alone...then i went back out there to check and she fluffed up like a porcupine and gave me the death-ray look and looked for certain that she would have NO problem plucking out my eyeballs if I came any closer...all the peeps were tucked under her like they belonged there.

So now I feel better.

I'd see what hatchery the chicks come from. The TSC in Midland gets chicks from Mt Healthy Hatchery (I'd look at what bantam breeds they carry on their website). It's usually a mixed variety of straight run bantams. In the Midland TSC, I did see some Golden Sebrights and Silkies. There were a lot of other breeds that I'm not familiar with in the bin, too. Haven't got into bantams until I picked two up at the Family Farm & Home in Alma (easy to guess the breeds I got -- Sebright and Silkie -- hehe). That's how I know what they look like -- after I picked them up, I needed to figure out what breed I bought.

thanks chickiemomma, our local hatchery is Townline out of zeeland but there web site only states assorted bantams in straight run they do not specify what breeds they have. My friend got silver and golden seabrights. I am helping my daughter look, its her birthday/christmas money.

you're selling banty hens that are laying? I sure hope bev doesnt read this... but she's so tired & sore from helping her dad all week with his big garage sale, hopefully they'll be gone before she reads this.

have you thought about making some kind of standoff's you could attack to your coop to keep the wire far enough away to preven the chickens from making contact? something like a plastic shelf bracket or pvc pipe about 6-8 inches long? I have a vision of pvc pipe with a slot cut in the end to press the wire into and then glued/screwed into a base that can be attached to the coop/run to hold the wire out, about 6-12 inches off the ground.
