Hey Steve. I've got one that is going thru a hard molt. Practically naked. I had to bring her in the heated garage where I have a 2 floor condo for chickens. You might want to bring her in some where warmer or at least where she can have a heat lamp. They have no way of keeping warm. Why do they do this in the winter?? I also give my chicken bologna for extra protein. they love it and will be your forever friend!

Coop is at 30 degrees and she seems to be fine.

I guess I must have friendly hogs or else they don't like chicken. One of the Isa Browns was in the hog pen and the pigs didn't even attempt to hurt her. I reached in and scooped her up....she kinda acted mad that I didn't leave her in there. The chickens clean up what feed the hogs miss, so she was at the all u can eat buffet.

Got the incubator today, in case any one missed the thread. Now I am anxiously awaiting fertile eggs.

We have chickens finishing up the molt. They are doing fine, just wish they would start laying! My daughter is about to start going backwards on feed costs vs eggs sold. They love cat food too!

Everyone is doing fine in the cold. Cats are glad to be in our heated garage, aka rec room.

The seed catalogs are mightly fine to look at today. Thinking of warmer times!

Steve, what kind of eggs are you thinking about incubating?

Keep warm everyone!

Hi Everyone!

My wife and I are new here. We make wooden craft items and are planning on making and selling some chicken coops this spring. One of the members saw the Garden Outhouses we make on Craigslist and asked us about making one for her as a chicken coop, so that's how we got introduced to this neat site. Here's some of our work:

Here I am with a 6' tall one:

Here's a nice red & white painted one

Here's one with gable ends

and here's a "standard" 5' tall one

If anyone is interested, we'll be making and selling some chicken coops this spring. We can make them any size, shape, or color. Thanks for looking!

At the rehab everyones favorite chicken Gracie is going through a hard molt I think because she got pneumonia. It was kind of funny she loves to be petted and at this time she is not wanting to be touched. Best part the couple that run the rehab did not know what was wrong with her so the ran her atright to the vet. Boy did I laugh when they told me they had taken her in. I never thougt to tell she was molting I thougt they knew. LOL guess now they know.

Now you are all talking about protine we give her meal worms and cream corn with calcium she is under weight also from being sick. Should we give her more?

She is a sex link and until she got sick she was a great layer. We do not expact her to lay until molt is over

We also have no clue of her she

Sitting here drinking coffee, read the newspaper, worked the crossword, now on line, stalling, trying to get up the nerve to go out and check the girls. I sure don't like this sub zero weather. Can't believe Steve isn't saying things like "Mom, would you like to go out for breakfast, or Dad, you want to going fishing this afternoon". But nope, he's here with the rest of us where about the only thing you hear spoken is "Brrrrrrr".

I'm on my way out to water and check on everyone. I really dread cleaning those stalls this morning. My horses are really wanting out of the barn, but that wind chill is just tooooo cold. My flock is doing fine with being confined...they have been all winter. My DH just got home from work early, so I'm gonna go get this stuff done and get back in to my coffee...and BYC friends.

Welcome to Alan & Tina!! We are not to far away! I live between ER & Charlotte, so hello neighbor!!

I soo don't want to go out this morning, but I am suiting up anyway. I had four 9 year old boys here last night for a birthday party and they were up most of the night. I think at 2am my husband stood outside the bedroom door for almost an hour telling them to be quiet until they finally went to sleep at 3 and then they were up at 7!

They are wound for sound and it is too cold to send them were they belong- OUTSIDE!! On second thought, the barn is sounding better and better!!

Got out to take care of the chickens today and they are all good. The water was frozen so cold it didn't even come out in a block it shattered into a zillion little pieces. They are set with warm water, full feeders, and a few leftovers from yesterday. The best news already got one egg today. Now to warm up with my coffee.
