They stop laying and look real ugly for awhile.

Seriously, though....mine won't come out unless it's 50 or above when molting. They look quite unkempt during. I've never actually seen a bare spot on them, but they look real raggedy..best way I can describe.

I had one that went through a veyr hard molt last fall, and I seriously thought she had coryza or something because she was swollen all around her eyes. Come to realize, she was in a super hard molt, and her eyes were irritated due to the new feathers coming in - she had been scratching at them. GROSS pics here...she really is a pretty girl (normally) - I'm almost embarrassed for you to see her in these pics, but you can see the molt best in the last picture. Anywho, you know not to worry if you see THIS!

Steve, they do it when their bods tell them it's time to do it. I've got a penedesenca that started a few weeks ago; she looks awful, and has lost EVERY tail feather but one! Not sure if you're familiar with penedesencas, bu they carry their tails STRAIGHT up in the air. So, she's got this one tail feather that's like a little flagpole on her back end and nothin' else!

I think it's okay. So long as they have a place to go to stay warm. I also give extra protein during molting in the form of a handful of dry cat food every few days. Lots of folks do this, some say you shouldn't. I've never had an issue with it. It helps them along with the process.

ummmm. no. Sister Mary Agnes is an icon around here. the others look up to her. she shows them how to get loose for their runs, how to go steal food from meaties and just cause mayhem in general.

but there is a Sis M.A. egg in the bator. if it's a pullet you can have her! shoot, if it's a cockerel you can have it!

But I have a new rule around this farm....NO MO MALES ALLOWED!

I'm talking about the chickens, of course. I've got roosters running out my ears!

Anyone want a nice Delaware roo? or two, or three? Or a Delahorn roo? or two, or three? How about a bantam blue cochin roo? or two, or three?

FREE!!!!!!!!

Please someone save me from all these eatin', fightin', crowin', poopin' roosters!

My kids got bored today and decided it would be fun to make water balloons!

They filled them up and then stuck them out in the snow to see how long it would take them to freeze. At least someone can find joy in this cold weather!
