Hey Everyone! I have a few questions that hoping someone Im sure can answer.

We are building our first chicken coop. We have 14 chicks as of now. 2 buff orps, 4 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 6 Rhode Island Reds, and 2 Barred Rocks. Now we are trying to figure out what a good size coop is for them. I was thinking maybe a 10x10, but my husband found some guy that builds them and he said that he has made quite a few for 13 chicks and the average size is a 6x8 coop. Saying that its nice to have a big coop, but you will more often then not find all your chickens huddled together up on the roosts and not using the whole coop anyways. Any input would be great as we are first time chicken keepers and need all the help we can get to make sure we do everything right. Thanks in Advance!

Go with the bigger coop...reason being, I can bet bottom dollar you will get more birds. More birds requires more room. I have 20 Isa hens in a 10 x 15 and I have plenty of room for about 10 more as they free range from just before dawn to dusk. Up to you but I would go bigger.

Hello everyone!
Recent transplant here to MI and I am also a new owner of some adorable chicks. My into is up on the into page, but I saw this link and figured I could find some good tips on chicken care for the local area here!

I haven't used Boyer's, but I did call a few days ago to find out what their processing fees are for ducks. The guy was nice enough, but his grammar left me with the same impression that you had. I don't think I'll be going there. Thankfully, Oopsy gave me contact information for the people she uses...Wilcox. That's where I'll be taking my birds when the time comes. It'll give me an excuse to come hang out with Oopsy!

Hi, Rams! Where ya' from? Welcome to BYC and the Michigan thread. Be sure to check out information regarding our get-together! Find Opa's name, and click on the link in his signature line. Hope we see you there!

First off, HAPPY MOTHERS DAY.

Rams: Welcome to BYC Michigan Forum. The people here are so caring, giving and full of knowledge. Im sure you'll enjoy your stay. Very cute coop. And such a variety of chickens.

YakLady you come hang out any time you can. My doors are open.

Im starting a new adventure. Im gonna make chicken coops. Some of you might have seen the coop I posted the picture of a couple weeks ago. Its aqua blue so to speak. Well i took husband 68 SS El Camino out of the barn and have it sitting in the yard covered up. (OMG he would shoot me for this) but he has all the wood working tools here and most are brand new. So cross your fingers I dont cut something off LOL. Ive always been afraid of saws ..but doing Emily's barn this past fall, Im over that. So, Im going to build a few for me and 1 for daughter for mothers day. And if anyone wants the plans and what to buy list, PM me and I'll send to you.

Heck might as well attach pictures of the small coops Im gonna build. Making one for my Top Hat ducks and 2 Pekins first. Then one for my Wellsummer chicks Opa brought to me and one for quarantine when needed. Gonna double the size to put by my pond to house my geese too. Ive modified a few things and its very workable for all poultry/waterfowl. And they dont cost that much to make.

Ramsdale Welcome to the Michigan thread. Lots of nice folks here and if you click on the link in my signature line you can find out how you can meet many of these nice folks. Chickenstock is just over a month away, we'd love to see you there. Great minds will tell you that a coop can never be too large.

Great job, OOopsy!!! I'm so proud of you! Happy Mother's Day to you and all the other moms out there.

Ooopsy, I'm going to have to come out there just to take a peek at that El Camino!!!!! How cool is that!?!

So I posted my intro a little over a week ago and am glad I checked back in. My flock plans were put on hold when I got a response from my twp supervisor about keeping chickens. I emailed him before I got them so my daughter wouldn't be crushed if we had to get rid of them. So he very nicely said that you have to live in the Agriculture/Residential area to "raise livestock" and must have 5 acres. Thinking it was a no go I sort of gave up on my dream of fresh eggs. So when I wandered over this way today and saw that others are having issues with township ordinances and that the law (RTFA) seems to be on our side I was so excited (about the law, not the issues other are having

). So I am in the process of drafting an email to the twp supervisor to push the issue politely. I will keep you guys informed. Also, are there any members who are close to Richland, MI that might let me come out and take a look at their chickens/coop.
