Well, in the DVD my DH got, the guy who does it (he's from MI, by the way, which I thought was pretty neat) is a cabinet builder by trade, and does signs on the side, but his workshop was FULL of really interesting and neat signs. Anywho, he just finds pics and text on the Internet, or finds a font he likes in Word, and then just blows it up to whatever size he needs for the sign; when you print it, it will print on several sheets of paper if it's big, and you can just tape the sheets together. Then, get regular old carbon paper - they sell it at any office supply store. Put the carbon paper on top of the wood, under the sheets of fonts/pic, and just use a blunt pencil to trace around it. Of course, he made it look amazingly easy!
One tip he gave was to choose fonts that do not have very pointy edges on them, because those are too hard to cut out.
Steve - thanks for the comment on the Alaskan cruise! I'd always heard bits & pieces, but to know of someone who actually went & loved it, just makes me want to work harder to save to go. I know they're expensive, but it would be a once in a lifetime thing for DH and I; we're pretty much homebodies!
Steve, I'm sure you could find a font that would work for that. If I can get going and actually make something that looks....well....not like something that a first grader made, I'll post a pic, and I'd be happy to kick out some signs for folks on here for the cost of the wood, so I can get some practice in!
