I'm only a few miles from Independence Lake - my son works there

It's a great place to picnic, swim, hike and enjoy the splash zone. I really miss having the kids around in the summer, now that they are grown and gone, it's too quiet around here - just quacking and clucking.

Good Morning!

The beds are assembled and everyone but the youngest is still sleeping

Need to finish cleaning the rooms today, then we have one level of the house deep cleaned. Yea!

Tomorrow morning at this time I will be at South Church in Lansing dropping off my oldest two for camp Barakel. It is so nice to just drive 1/2 hour and the bus takes them up to Fairview. They need to finish packing and a trip to Walmart to pick up a few things they need.

Have a great day!

Sarah

Hey Everyone! Hope this finds everyone having a great day, even if it is hot and muggy out. I have to rehome my beagle after husband found three of our chickens and one of his ducks dead. He caught our dog killing one in the act and said either you find him a home asap or ill take him outback.....Thats more of a threat then a real action. He couldnt really hurt a dog.lol ANYWAYS....I know that there probably isnt any one dog that is good for chickens or kids but we are looking for a medium sized dog that has to be good with chickens and kids. Any recommondations? No pits, or beagles.lol

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog and your birds. For a replacement dog, I would not recommend a Corgi. They're herders who are heel nippers by nature. Fatal for birds. We now have a year old Miniature Australian Shepherd, and he's learning how to leave them alone and not try to herd them unless we've asked him for assistance. He'll drive them out of where they're not wanted, but needs our help to guide them into where they do belong. He doesn't bite at them, but might run them into a fence if we don't have the gate open. So far, none have been injured. We're still working on controlling him by command. He doesn't have the killing instinct, but that could change anytime a dog finds blood.
They can have a nervous disposition, so when it comes to kids, be sure you go to a reputable breeder who can advise you for that.
I've wondered if those black and white sheep dogs would be good. I see them herding sheep by looking at them, not chasing.
Let us know if you find something that works...

Huston's Happy Hens.....I think the name should be changed to Huston's Ecstatic Hens. Those chickens have it made. Beautiful coop, wooded area to free range in, a stream to drink from... what more could they ask for. Nancy and Steve were great hosts. Great visit.

Good Morning everyone!! Looks like a bit of rain today. Now I have to close the new coop windows my son put in on Sunday!

He asked me if I wanted and awning too.

This is me and my son's dog (pitbull) Duke...I wanted the name Petey because that is who he looks like... but my son said everyone would call him that and steal him so he named him Duke. he is a sweet dog.

Everyone have a wonderful day!

As for what dogs are good with chicks. Perhaps a younger dog that you can get used to the chickens would be better then a certain breed. I've known many "high pray drive" breeds who have been amazing with birds, and maybe who have not. I personally have a husky/GSD/Elkhound mix who would LOVE to eat the chickens if given a chance...so we just don't give her the chance.

I'm also always a big fan of mutts.

Hah! Try riding 25 miles down a disty trail in it, with horse sweat flicking back into your face!

Just got back from Day 1 and Day 2 of the GLDRA Shore to Shore Endurance Race (we're NOT the Michigan Trail Riders) and my horse and I won both days in our weight division!

This was my horse's first multi-day ride in 10 years but she did great. To give you an idea of what we did. On Sun we rode from Oscoda's River Road Camp to Lake Huron and back. Then yesterday we rode from River Road to the South Branch camp for a total of 50 miles in 2 days. She's old enough now I don't attempt the whole 250 miles and I don't have a rotation horse, so we quit while we were ahead. I even got to take her swimming in the Au Sable River afterward. That was fun!

Here's a picture of us 2 weeks ago on the banks of the AuSable River on a conditioning ride.
