They can have a nervous disposition, so when it comes to kids, be sure you go to a reputable breeder who can advise you for that.
I've wondered if those black and white sheep dogs would be good. I see them herding sheep by looking at them, not chasing.

It's a great place to picnic, swim, hike and enjoy the splash zone. I really miss having the kids around in the summer, now that they are grown and gone, it's too quiet around here - just quacking and clucking.
