I thought I heard "somewhere" that cockerels raised together would get along.

Are they going to keep this up?

They don't have their spurs yet....but they did this 'til they were laying side by side hanging on to each others' faces. I had to pick them up, put the antibiotic ointment on their combs and wattles and put them to bed.

I have two of these black cross bantams I want to hang on to for seeing how they turn out, and my blue is not liking it. I'm just not well set up for separate pens for everyone. uh. They did seem to be getting along well today. Maybe it's a good sign.
Thanks,

Bethanyrae,
My experience is that once a couple of roos go at eachother, it will not end until one is quite injured. I hope that is not the case for you.
I had two identical brothers nearly kill eachother!!!!
The only roos that seem to do okay at my place are standards paired with a bantam.

Beth...we had a pair of comets that were given to me as chicks one day the less dominant one started.......fertilizing eggs....then the dominant one got mad and i came home to blood all over the side of the barn. We had to kill one and we were able to keep the dominant one. I have 3 Silver Penciled Rock cockerals in a pen and im gunna see what happens. I also had 2 Jap roos in a pen for over a year and they never fought. Then one day one went blind and probabally couldnt fight him so...

Once roosters start assuming that challenge posture it is only a matter of time until blood will fly. I'd separate them, choose the bird you want to keep and get rid of the others. So folks advocate letting them fight as a means of selection but to me that seem unnecessarily cruel and won't always result in the best rooster for you flock. While you will have the one that is the best fighter it won't always be the bird that has the traits you want.

It is going to be a hot a sticky day and I need to go empty the tools for my truck that we used on yesterday's job and load the one needed for todays. Just thinking about working in this humid weather is getting me tired before I have even started. We have to drive to Willis to install a wood coffered ceiling so I guess I need to get in gear instead of sitting here in the air conditioned comfort of my house.

Yea I am doing soffit and facia and hard to do when the sweat is poring into the eyes and the grit from the shingles iis droppin in the eyes right along with it ... this humidity has to go sooner or later.

yep and I have to have this and another shed done by the time that snow does fall. It wont be that difficult but I sure dislike pounding together in the high humidity .. the heat is not as bad as the humidity tho.

Opa you will be anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes away from us today. If I knew when we would be home I would invite you to stop in. It looks like a trip to the Dr's for the boys though. The Vorweck we got from you are doing well.

Bethany -- While I disagree that it's only a matter of time once roosters start displaying this behavior (I've raised many roosters who liked to assume the position but were too chicken to follow through) I think in your case they have shown that they both mean business and that's the key. If they didn't mean business they would not latch onto one another the way you describe, they'd assume that position, sit there for a while in a staring contest and then when one made a move the other would beeline it out of there. Since they both intend to follow through on their threats there will be real fights in their future if you don't rehome or eat one of them.

Yes! In my case, I was seeing aggressive behavior & thinking, "I hope this doesn't get bad." What I didn't realize was that it WAS bad! My roos went from "tussling" to nearly dead in 24 hours. If they look like they mean business, seperate immediately!

Morning Everyone!
Long time no post....vacation, hubby recooping (recoup)

keeping up w/house/gardens/chickens (3 groups)/broodies (3), working, time is short and sleep periods are even shorter!
Rose and KrisRose it was nice having you visit...seems like a such a LONG TIME AGO, but I think it's only been 3 weeks! Black Broody decided that after about 18 days she didn't want to sit on them any longer, so she's back with the adult flock and seems to be very happy...now if she'll only start laying soon! Our production is still low. K/KR, the day you were here I actually got about 9 eggs, you two are good luck...how about coming to live with me for awhile!

Now I have one white rock and 2 buff orps who are very serious about laying....so I'm trying my luck again. I put the 3 eggs that were under black broody under one of the orps just in the off chance that they would hatch. They feel heavy, so I'm sure that they were fertile and there was some development along the way...let's see this is about the 5th time we've tried to hatch out our own eggs, wish me luck!
Sam and or anyone else who purchased some of the wellies or EE from that order, would you please post when your girls start to lay....according to my calculations they'll be 5 months at the end of this month and we should begin to see some eggs which I am desperately in need of!
A good friend had twins about 3 wks ago and the Rebecca and Sophia are still in the hospital. Both were doing better and improving and then yesterday, Rebecca began developing some digestive issues and became listless....more details, but would appreciate prayers for these little ones...thanks! Nancy
