This was one of the strangest deer seasons I can remember. Normally I see over 100 deer each time I go out. This year it would be 3 or 4. Also not much shooting going on either. I did take two milk breath does so we have some fine eating in store. I usually take 7 deer each season and David will take 2 or 3. Historically I take most of them during the muzzleloading season. Gun season I primarily hunt for a trophy bucks and let the does walk. Once the cold of December hits I get serious about filling my freezer.

We have had a lot of folks saying they haven't seen many deer around here. We haven't even seen any signs at all of deer. We used to see a lot of them just in our driveway. Good luck during muzzleloading season.

Thanks for jumping in there Opa!

My season was the same way, the 2 deer that I did see were very spooked. They were already going nocturnal before gun season even started. I had the week off for the opener and I didn't see anything I could shoot at all week. I finally connected on a fat doe on the weekend at my house (not much pressure at home). I'm still planning on going out muzzle loader season and the late doe as well.

Glad you connected on some doe for the freezer.

What do you suppose it is? Do you think there was an increase in bow hunters, or perhaps poaching? Think the earlier youth and early doe have anything to do with it?
I think the state's issuing too many permits really. I know we need the population down in some areas, but this is almost rediculous!

Anyone here raise turkeys? How difficult is it?

First Snow of the year, and it seems that the chickens aren't any happier about it then me.

I went to let the chickens out and as to be expected as soon as I rustled the latch of the Hen House they all piled up by the door.

Normally when I open the door there all come stampeding out of the door but to day was different. As soon as the first chickens toes tuch the cold snow the door way turned in to a 12 chicken pileup or so.

The chickens in the the front were trying to get the snow off there toes, the chickens in the middle were getting squished by the chickens in the back that wanted to see what the hold up was all about. In the roosters house things were just as funny the roosters and my 4 naughty hens took terns looking out there door cause no one would go out it all of the white stuff.

SillyChicken - I raise turkeys. We have narragansetts. It's not difficult. IME/O they are very hardy birds. The poults need to be kept warm and dry, but so do chicks. The only real difference there is that with poults small mishaps or mistakes can result in death faster. There is less margin for error. If you've got a good brooding setup and a little experience it should be a breeze though. Ours are not stupid or messy or pigs as you sometimes hear. Most of these things are a functionof their management, imo. Are you looking at heritage turkeys or broad-breasteds?

As a testament to their hardiness I even have one poult that hatched this morningin the bator, another pipped and 5 others that I *think* will be hatching here shortly and they've beento unborn poult hell and back again already. Their mama picked a terrible place to go broody, got herself attacked by a coon, abandoned the nest (thank goodness, she only lost some butt feathers) when I found the eggs they were ice cold, I didn't even know their hatch date, the one that is hatched pipped in the turner this morning. He was transferred out of the turner to hatch and the humidity was raised after he pipped. And he's alive, fluffy and well.
