If anyone in the Lansing area (or further if you want to drive) is interested in some Isa Brown hatching eggs I have a friend who raises them for eggs and she sells her eating eggs for $1.50/doz and her hatching eggs for the same price

I might throw a couple dozen in with my next hatch.

I bet the poor boy's all tuckered out! He's had a stressful few days.

Now you need to take the head-banging emoticon over to the heavy metal thread!

Have fun.

Can this double as a moshing emoticon?

Funny story about another mean rooster of mine....this one was aggressive and came at not only my husband but me everyday I went to the coop....they were free rangers and I had to take something like a stick with me anytime I was in the coop area and watch my back! My husband had cancer that year and even though the rooster was mean...I couldn't bring myself to kill him. On Mothers Day..my husband said he was sorry but hadn't bought me a card or gift. I said the BEST gift would be eliminating the rooster. (neither of us had acquired the skill of wringing necks by the way). I was outside later that day and heard a shot. My husband came up the hill from the back yard (where chickens were ranging)...holding the DEAD rooster by his feet and he was singing..." Daniel Boone was a Man....yes, a bigggg man!" I couldn't stop laughing!!

It was a GREAT gift. (sorry if I offend anyone by being happy to get rid of a very mean rooster)

I actually only got (forget the exact number) something like 9 or 10 from My Pet Chicken a year or two ago and it was in March. They came with a heat pack and arrived fine. I live in North Michigan and had them in my heated basement with lamp for about 4-5 weeks and then moved them to the coop with heat lamp for some more weeks....following the recommended dropping or tapering off of the heat lamp. I can't remember when I let them outside.....I have a 8X10 coop and they had lots of room in the coop until I felt it safe weather-wise. I'm a worrier about our cold springs too.

You're preaching to the choir.

I seem to recall a thread on the Managing Your Flock where a woman's rooster attacked her child and while she took her child into the house to get cleaned up and bandaged, she cam outside to find that her husband had killed the rooster! And she was MAD at him! She was complaining to us on here, who all said that he did the right thing.

No one on here would be mad at you for dispatching a mean rooster.

I'm sure the forum will be abuzz today with talk about the genetically modified chickens in the news. Most people have a hard enough time deciphering the difference between hybrid and GM plants and produce, having to now grasp the concept with their chickens ought to be interesting. I'm taking bets as to what portion of the population will think this is a first and a sign that the sky is falling.

Some people...

No offense taken here, fifelake. I have a zero tolerance policy for human-centered aggression.

Glad I didn't offend anyone with the rooster killing. One day I had on flipflops and was unarmed when attacked by him and my flip flop flew off while try to kick at him and I was fearful for my life!

okay...true story but not fearing for my life ...just being funny-- but I was scared. My husband was in the distance watching and laughing! I picked up my last rooster everyday on purpose to keep him more docile. Worked with me but no one else. Is it better to "cuddle" or ignore? So far....it seems cuddling worked better....

The most important thing, regardless of how you treat your roosters, is that you cull ruthlessly. Aggression is often at least partially inherited. Hatcheries worry about egg production, not temperament or physical appearance beyond the basics. Some breeders, likewise, will keep aggressive roosters. If you cull aggressive roosters ruthlessly they cannot pass on their genetics, as the generations continue aggression will eventually be all but eradicated.

That said, there's pretty extensive documentation among other species that an animal -- birds included -- that are unfamiliar with being in your personal space will require much more motivation to put themselves in close contact with you than those who are well accustomed to being in close contact with you. IOW, a rooster, gander, drake, tom, etc that has not been coddled will be far less likely to see you as something he should/could be challenging. And if/when he does he's more likely to retreat with less pressure from you to do so. We do not coddle.
