Someone locally who has fertile eggs, but not rare/show quality/high demand for their breed -- someone who may even have a mixed flock and thus have "mutt eggs", would be your best bet. Shipping can have nasty effects on hatching eggs. It'd be much preferable for your first time to hatch something that is more likely to give you encouraging results.

drumroll please...

60 Days Until April 1

Recently the birds have started singing their spring-like morning songs and I've now seen three flocks of Canadian geese headed Northeast. There is hope, people. There is hope!

I tried looking at the feathers but don't really understand that method... guess I'm going to have to just wait and see as they grow.

Isn't it GREAT?!

And today is sunny and not too terrible temperature wise. I cannot wait for spring. And to make things better there are less than 30 days until it's time to start the first seeds for the 2011 garden.

I wish we could get just one more mid-winter thaw though. I didn't get to take full advantage of the thaw we had on New Year's. We were too busy. Normally when it comes in mid to late January I open up all the windows and doors, turn the furnace off and get the house aired out, sweep out all that dust that seems to accumulate no matter what you do when everything is closed up for months... This place could really use a good mid-winter thaw cleaning.

I really hope it doesn't have to wait for spring.

Hello All, Look at the sun, WOW, don't see that enough and I've missed that. I'm really ready for the summer season to begin! Haven't posted much since joining last year about the time of the last Chickenstock. So hello again and hopefully we'll be able to make this new Chickenstock. There were some outstanding birds there last year especially the trio of Buff Orphingtons.

Reading back through previous postings I see there are more folks in my area. Hello to my neighbors in Brooklyn, Norvell, Ann Arbor, SE Michigan, etc.. We have a farm a few miles southwest of Saline. We have 'old-time' Blue Slate turkeys, with the males have a reddish banding in the tail feathers. Some call them Lilac's but I've always called them Blue Slates, a couple of un-improved bronze hens and 6 Royal Palm hens. For chickens we have Wellsummers and some cross aracuanas and India Blue Peafowl.

Looking through the Ann Arbor Craig's List this morning and came across a couple of poultry related ads. I don't usually pass these things on but thought maybe someone on here would be interested in the info. Not sure about posting phone numbers, even though they are in the ads. Copied ads as presented...

Hello!
I will be graduating with honors from Michigan State with a degree in Sustainable and Organic Horticulture. I have a passion for growing food. I would like to connect with several homeowners where we, over the next several years increase your food production with gardens, berries of choice, and compatible fruit and nut trees as well as medical herds, flowers, and livestock. I am very interested in permaculture and edible forest gardens. Let me know how I can help!
Best, GinnyG * Location: Ann Arbor

Have a great day and enjoy this sunshine... Jim

Not sure how to do a spell check on here.

Just got done wing-sexing (they're between 2 and 3 days old so today was my last chance!) and found that, if I'm right, I have 21 pullets and 7 cockrels! (Sheldon is a cockrel...I think he's going to stay with us!)

Now everyone is seperated by sex

Hey IndyBlu!! Nice to see you again! Hope you can make it to Chickenstock again. Enjoyed meeting you last year.
Enjoy the sun while you can, folks. Did you see we are to have a snow storm Tues-Wed?? DH said 8-12 inches, but don't know if he was just pulling Krisrose's tail or not.
