Wow! You all have been busy posting! Lets see if I can catch up...

What color were they as chicks? ISAs are sex linked. If they were a light red/copper and white, they should be female. All ISAs, even females, have big red combs so don't let that fool you.

Ducks are covered in a heavy coat of down and are born with one of nature's most efficient internal heating systems -- even for their bare feet. As long as they have access to shelter from the elements they don't need to be confined for storms whatsoever. Storms, as a matter of fact, are some of most ducks' favorite weather. If we get the freezing rain they're calling for your ducks would LOVE to be out playing in it. Remember ducks are ducks, not humans. It is futile and even potentially damaging to humanize animals and make decisions on that basis.

Hmm, doesn't sound like Sam. Doesn't ring a bell as to anyone on this thread, actually.

Please don't relocate varmint. If you can't bring yourself to put them down, just double up the security of your coop and don't trap them to begin with.

It's not uncommon for this to happen at all. Put them on opposite sides of a fence and at night you can put the new roo in the coop, just inside an old rabbit cage or something, for warmth. He'll be fine running around by himself during the day. It should calm down in fairly short order. When you do introduce them face to face again, without a fence between you may want to go ahead and bring your roo out into the yard even. The extra space they have free ranging helps to calm squabbles faster, ime. They can get further apart, see each other from across the yard, fight and then retreat a good distance, etc. Good luck! Just because they fought now doesn't mean they can't get along later.

My daughter's d'Uccle has existed solely on the bird seed the wild birds drop from the three feeders outside all winter. I haven't seen her eat actual feed since last summer. She spends all day scratching around under the feeders and is no worse for wear. It's not ideal if you're looking for them to actually produce anything. And isn't exactly economical, but if they eat some here and there I wouldn't worry too much. At least yours are getting the whole mix. This d'Uccle is only eating whatever the wild birds drop.

I hope you all have had a good weekend. It's chilly out there today but not terrible. We'll see what tonight actually brings weather wise. It was supposed to have already been here and it seems every weather station has a different forecast for what the storm system will usher in.

Being on the edge of all the stations' viewing areas... who knows! I spent the morning outside getting the geese settled into their breeding pens for the spring and doing other various chores. Today is my birthday and DH got me a new (to me, I like the older style stocks) 20ga with both bird and slug barrels plus a new scope for it. I'm hoping to get out this afternoon before the storm comes in to shoot some. Just trying to warm up from this morning first. He also got me a beautiful hummingbird feeder, but it'll be a while before I can use that!

How come it looks so pretty on television or on a card but after having experienced 50 degree weather it looks horrible?

Happy birthday Olive Hill. Great present.

I wanted to let anyone interested know that I posted new pictures of some of the flock on my website page for the Sussex...

Here's an updated picture of "Sheldon" the chick who survived the cracked egg situation... He's a cocky lil' fart!

Because we don't have to go out in a picture or card to do chores, of course!

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I agree about the present. Hubby earned himself some bonus points, for sure.

Thanks for the bday wishes fife and HH!

The storm finally rolled in here not too long ago. We've got several inches on the ground so far. All the very soft, wet sort of snow. Can't complain too much because we desperately need the precipitation, but I hope it melts off quickly once this systems moves through. If the 40 degrees and rain they're calling for later this week is accurate, it should.

Happy Birthday Olive Hill!!!

I picked up one of the faverolle chickens I gave my SIL. She was the last one, and got picked on so bad. She's in quarantine until I can get her dusted and checked over better. She almost looks like a turken her head and neck feathers have been almost been plucked off. Her feet have an unhealthy gray color, so I'm wondering if she has mites or something going on. Some of the scales look thick, but not all scaley/crusty or anything.

We got about 3 inches, and now the rain is coming...everything is getting crusty! We got more gas for the generators in case the power goes out. Keeping my fingers crossed I can get to work tomorrow!

Our poor Oreo, our special needs girl. She's layin AGAIN, however her mate as well as now her son's which are now 5mths old, and her daughters as well are going after her by far more then the 7 girls, why is that? Do the males know or sense that she can't get away from them as easily and as quickly? I've had the mate and one of the sons on Oreo at once!! I just feel so terribly for her they are gang.....well you know, banging her! It's horrible and I just want to take her away from all that. With one leg, can to much weight from the boys hurt her? She is only 2 1/2lbs where as everyone else is 3+lbs. I know this is part of life and breeding season, but when is enough ENOUGH? The dad and brothers aren't even hardly attempting the other girls, why would that be?? What should I do for Oreo so she isn't gang banged? I hate using the R word, I don't really like using gang bang either, I guess double mated I guess. No sooner does 1 male finish off the other who's on top of that male immediately finishes off giving no break to Oreo. I'm sad for her! I really have to get this girl a diaper.

This is how she is a special needs girl, she was born with her leg up, can't move it down, can't straighten it, or can she really truly swim with the full leg, but she gets around, forgive me if I already posted this picture.
