I'm SO sad!!!

Some of you might remember, last summer one of my 4 calls suddenly had bleeding wings. After freaking out and posting like crazy here on BYC, I learned it was angel wings. So I wrapped them a few different times and he's been fine since.

Now we all know it's been rainy, etc so all my white birds were filthy! They've washed up good a few times, but it didn't last long before they were muddy all over again. So when one of my snowy calls wasn't getting clean, I sadly didn't think much of it! Til today.

Well, last week I was noticing Sammy would float in the pond but not clean like the others. Again, I thought maybe he was when I wasn't watching. OMG, I feel like a HORRIBLE "mother"!!!

I think he has mites. Or had. I looked him over really well today and didn't see anything moving or anything, but my Poodles are famous for getting fleas every fall so I know the bugs can leave horrible dirt even if you don't always see them. I posted these pics in the duck section and everyone so far agrees it's probably bugs.

Anyone else here have any other ideas or agree? Should I dust them all anyway? I checked over half of my other ducks and no one else seems to have a problem! Can one get it and not the rest? I've done a LOT of research tonight and notice most people use Sevindust. I think someone talked about it here recently but although I read here every day, I haven't been feeling well enough to pay as much attention as I should.

I feel terrible. Poor little Sammy!

I washed Sammy up thinking he was just muddy so that's why his wings are wet

Bottom left. The middle of the top of his wings are hard as a rock! His chest is prickly, not silky at all. But not brownish like the rest of him.

That was quite a light show last night that rolled through here. The rain couldn't have come at a better time since Hope and I spent all day yesterday working on flower beds. While this insn't the best time to transplant irises, given how overgrown the beds had become we really didn't have much choice but to pull most of them and transplant.

Granny is due to return from Missouri at 1130 this morning. However, they have already announced on the news that flights are going to be delayed this morning. Hopefully it won't be to much hassle for her. She is getting back at a good time. The apple trees are filled with blossoms, the lilacs are blooming, and an Amaryllis in the house has finally floomed after two years of waiting. Two large red atop the stalk sure make it worth the wait.

Keyt, it is highly unlikely that only one bird would be infested with mites while the rest of your flock in clean. I would suspect that there is some other issue going on with the bird. The problems you have had with it are just why I refuse to take extraordinary efforts for any bird that is less than 100 percent. While culling is difficult I personally feel that it is a more responsible husbandry procedure.

Chickmate...are you making your autodoor opener or buying one?? Have you found one you wanted in particular? I've been interested in getting one of these for several years!

Keyt-

In order to see if you have a lice/mite infestation- which I dont think that is what that is- grab a couple of your fluffy butt chickens and look at their rear end. The feather shredding, where you only have the feather spines, is typical of lice, but they tend to attack the butts of your hens first, and move upward. Ducks dont usually get mites/lice as bad as chickens do because of them always in the water. To have a lice infestation so badly that one duck would be chewed up like that, everyone should have obvious lice/mites crawling around them. AND, you should be able to see the lice/mites crawling on a duck that chewed up. I dont see any in your picture.

That looks almost nutritional. Or being chewed up by another family member. Because that is the only duck with a problem, your feed is most probably fine but it could be something internally wrong with the duck that doesnt allow it to process what it needs.

I'm not handy enough to make my own so I'll be purchasing one. I found one a couple of months back that looked pretty nice and wasn't too expensive, but it's from the UK and I'd rather keep looking and find on made here.

Gee, I never thought of that! I was reading a thread the other day where someone said a guy built an automatic door opener/closer with a car antenna, light sensor and car battery. I think this is it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/vie … ole-opener.
