She does help a lot! It's been too dangerous to take the kids out to do chores on the chickens and rabbits....darn skeeters attack!!

I don't want them covered in bites so when it's bottle time around 6pm Hannah and Aaron hang out on the couch and I run outside and have about 30 minutes to get things done!

this hatching thing has been like opening presents, can't wait to see what's inside! Looks like it's gonna be a count of 13. The little chick I mentioned must have died while I was saying it might be an internal thing. Poor thing only lived outside of the egg about 2 hours

but I know that's nature.

A handful of them probably came from the Aracauna x RIR roo but they so far look all aracauna! The rest are little surprises but it's been fun guessing. The all black ones are easy.

Once I get them all eating happy I'll probably put all but a handful on CL since my friend can't take them. I cant wait to take pics tomorrow!

Wow, what a beautiful hen. She actually looks like she has very long eyelashes! You know, I have never given much thought to this hatching thing (yet...) so I never considered a broody hen and how she cares for her eggs. I thought they just sat on them till they hatched. After I read Opa's post it dawned on me that she must turn her eggs too! I know you hatching nuts talk about turning the eggs and it seems like it is such a precise science, so the hen knows to turn her eggs every however often it has to be done? I just never thought about it before! Does she mark them like Keyt does?

I now have even more respect for our feathered friends!

I think I read somewhere that a hen turns the about 24 times a day. Pretty amazing when you consider she doesn't have a sharpie.

Morning everyone...
Sorry about all the puddles and ponds and overflowing water downstaters! The pictures posted of the flooded areas are unbelievable. Doesn't happen here at all...thankfully...but this morning the temp at 5am was 32.3. Sooo....I may not get those apples after all. I covered up a lot of stuff last night but can't cover up everything so will have to wait and see what if any damage was done.
Meanwhile...I have two "pips' on my Jersey eggs!

We have to take our pooch to the vet and we are vacicnating my chicks as soon as they hatched. These will go upstairs into a homemade brooder in the bathroom. In the spare room upstairs I have 3 grouse eggs that may or may not hatch that are in a still air incubator...in the basement I have my 4 wk. old English Orpingtons and outside I have my 8 wk old Orpingtons in a coop and another coop with my 13 red comets. EE I EE I OOOOOOOO......
Then night before last my hubby went into atrial fib and we've been told they can't use the "paddles" on him anymore (done four times in the past few years) to put him back into rhythm and he will have to have a procedure...possibly open heart surgery to correct this condition. He is only 59 but has had this issue and cancer in the past so has dealt with his share of health woes. The Lord healed/ cured him of cancer and we hope He will get him through this too.
Glad to see everyone is happy on this site again....I hate disagreements when we all should just be friends. (lets all hold hands now and sing Kumbaya...LOL)
Great pictures RIR and Opa.

With so many of you facing rather damp conditions to get to your birds I can only pray for better weather. For some strange reason an old Johnny Cash song keeps playing in my mind....How high's the water Momma?

Sam-

You always find the BEST smileys to use..

Has anyone heard from Olive Hill? I am ready to make a nugget out of this cockerel I promised her- he will be lucky to live until Chicken Stock. He chases my ducklings, kicks my sizzle's behind..is generally a pain to my flock.

RIRJEN!!!!! Are you bringing Silkies to Chicken stock? Please add me to your list if you are

Keyt- bring your extra chicks to Chicken Stock, you would probably find homes for them there

Fifelakelooper- prayers for your husband, I hope the best for him and you, and the knowledge needed for the doctors and surgeons. Jersey Giants and Red Comets- my favorite big birds. Our Carmen was my favorite chicken and since losing her, the rest have just been 'chickens'...she was special.

Chickmate- I do hope you will bring showgirls to chicken stock. I just cant bring myself to attempt to hatch anymore this year, because it was such a disappointment for me with all the unhatched attempts.
(of course, I thought of sending your eggs to Sams house for him to incubate them

)

Sam- do you smoke quail as well? Those quick hatching little popcorn chicks are so quick and cute and I had at one point considered putting them under my broody frizzle. I feel bad for her- I put sebright eggs under her, nine of them, and when I candled them all but two looked infertile with loose air cells. Two of them are questionable.

Smoking chickens is more difficult than you might think. I really stretches your fingers and then there the decision on where to place your lips.
