Some of you have heard me complaining about my lawn tractor breaking down repeatedly. It has broken down four times in the last three weeks and I was so frustrated and depressed that I couldn't get my lawn mowed. The poor chickens were getting lost in the back yard because the grass was so high! My retirement pension just doesn't allow for a new mower, so I kept spending money to keep the old one going. The repair guy was planning a new addition to his shop because of me.

Well, this morning I could have sworn I heard my daughter's voice, (she lives 2 1/2 hours away) so I looked out the window and see Amy, her husband Brian and step-son Tyler driving up the drive pulling a trailer. In the trailer is a brand new shiny red Craftsman lawn tractor!! For me!! I was speechless. What a wonderful, incredible, awesome daughter and son-in-law I have! I am so amazed. Brian is not one to spend money without a lot of thought and consideration, so for him to allow Amy to do this for me is one of the kindest most loving things I can think of. I told him I would make payments to him and he said "this is a gift, you don't make payments on a gift." Amy said "Mom, you have done for me your whole life. Who nursed me when I was sick, bought my prom dresses, scraped money together to send me to Russia with my school group, paid for voice lessons, who helped pay for my wedding? This is my chance to do something for you." I love them both so much!

Opa,
From what I gather, the smoked chicken is delectable. I can't wait to try some! And gosh, those Vorwecks are really cute! Why, oh why, is poultry so adorable?

Keyt, instead of calling the chicks and ducks mixed, you could call them exotics, then you could charge even more, sort of like people who pay a lot of money for mixed breed dogs like chinese crested dachshunds, or some such thing.

Kind of restores your faith in people a bit, doesn't it? A guy down the road from me sells wood that way. He leaves a wheelbarrow full of chopped wood at the end of his driveway with a coffee can that says LEAVE WHAT YOU THINK IS FAIR. I've often wondered if there is ever any money in the can.

Tonight after the older flock had gone to roost I counted BCM babies like I do every night before locking the run door. They free range all day and I was gone for a few hours, so I always check to make sure they are all accounted for. I leave the pop door open and lock the coop and run doors so they can all get out into the run early and not have to wait for me to let them out. There were only six. Looked in the coop but they weren't in their little corner where they usually sleep. Must have counted wrong. Counted again, still only six. Looked behind the coop. Looked behind the shed. Looked under the deck. Looked in the coop again. Looked up and there they were, four of them roosting with the big chickens for the first time! They're growing up!

. I sell my excess eggs and those from a friend at work, we have a list of people who we call when there are eggs available. We charge $2 a dozen and have no trouble moving them. Do those of you who sell eggs wash them first if they are soiled?

Here are my little vorwerks at 1 1/2 weeks, it is a pretty transformation indeed

So once our chickens stop laying are they still good to eat? I was told you dont want to eat them after a year old. Is there a particular way you prepare them if the meat comes from older chickens? Curious.

Im a veggie but I do cook for my meat lovin hubby. Any advice welcome
