CAT - I'm in the same boat. We live in a small subdivision and in the city limits. We also have an acre yard, and all fenced in. Our coop is about 150' from the back of the house. I would NEVER get away with a standard breed rooster.
We got our first pair of Serama last year. I would recommend them. There can be differences in roo's though. Our first one is very muted - you'd never hear him from the house. I thought this was true for all until I got a Serama roo from Mom_2_em_all. Are you listening Mom_2_em_all???? He is very loud, like 2 or 3x as much as the other roo. He can really belt it out. Anyway, now I'm worried he might blow my cover. We'll see what happens. (I'm not complaining Mom, he is a great guy)
So, if you'd like to give it a shot, I'd recommend the Serama. BTW : I have a pure Serama cockeral in the basement with 3 Serama mix cockerals. I'd give you one if you'd like. He isn"t crowing yet< but when he starts you"ll laugh
