Mariah - our Brahma is dry now (I took her into the car and blasted warm air over her untill she was dry). She sqwaked in protest a bit but it was pretty weak. She just laid in my lap with her eyes closed and whimpered every so often. As I examined her, her crop felt pretty hard. Could this be the cause of her being so lathargic?

We will be heart broken if we lose her. I read that olive oil and warm water can help break up the crop? Have any of you sucessfully attemped to unimpact a crop?

Thanks

Jaime

Hi Mom to em all:

Where in "southeast, MI" are you?

We have a female Toulouse who lost her mate last year. We were looking for someone who would want her to match up with a male or on the flip side, we were thinking of looking for another male for her. Is your Henry a verified "he"?

Do a search on impacted crops, there's lots of info here on that, plus on doing surgery if you have to! Good luck with her.

What kind of fishing are you doing? We fish almost every day, mostly for whatever bites. If we're fishing for catfish, then we use stink baits and fish at night. Stink baits are usually liver that are marinated in it's own juice and the smelliest spices we can round up mixed in and leave it in the fridge for 24 hours or longer. That brings the cats up really quick! It's great for carp too. We love carp because the chickens go crazy over it and there's no cleaning like with catfish.

If we're fishing for anything else we use a combination of regular worms and nightcrawlers. I put the worm on first then the night crawler. The worms wiggle more and the nightcrawler gives it bulk on the hook. In most fishing instances I use size 2 hooks because they're easier to hold onto. The bigger the size the smaller the hook.

If you're just going to sit there and enjoy the day, worms are great. If you want some action in your fishing then get some spinners.

I cant imagine what did her in. The desciption of the crop sounded normal. Like a hard golf ball. I do know that Chickflick lost a hen that we both think died from stress from huge roo she had. Perhaps the stress of being out in storm was just too much.
Sorry for the loss of your hen

She looked fine this morning. My neighbor saw her all huddled up in the corner of the run all by herself during the bad storm today. I am not sure what happened. She was one of our original chicks that my niece picked out. My husband will be upset .....I haven't the heart to tell him yet.

I buried her beneath one of my young cherry trees.
