oh Keyt, Im so sorry. It was probably the heat, it's 104 in the shade on the east side of my house today. 104!! what's UP with that??
We averted a near disaster tho, almost lost the chocolate lab to heat exhaustion today, seriously. He's in the house, in A/C recovering now. I had put him OUTside the fenced area where the 2 labs run, along with the ducks and Chante's, 4 other birds in the run we built and JG's in the tractor. I knew the ducks were hot cuz I saw them panting, so I dumped the wading pool, only a 45" model for children, filled it and let them have about an hour by themselves so they could cool down before letting the lab back in. He messes it up so bad. Meanwhile he was out pacing laps around the outside of the fence, knowing I was filling the pool and he wanted in, but I ignored him. When I could see the ducks were not panting any longer, I called the lab to come get in the pool, he didn't come. So I gave up and went house mumbling something about I wasn't gonna waste any more time with his miserable butt. Started to do dishes at the sink when I saw him finally come from the east side around to the west where the hose and bucket are near the tele pole, and he was panting so hard he couldn't even get a drink, he collapsed!! I ran out and he was breathing SO HARD and couldn't get up on his forearms at ALL. I immediately filled the bucket about 8 times and poured it over him slowly trying to bring his body temp down. Finally had to run for the hose, which had hot water in it now cuz of being in the sun. Ran it till it cooled and began hosing him down, removed his collar so I could get his neck cool. Finally I ran in and woke my hubby from his nap and told him I thought Mousse might have seized in the heat or something, he came down and helped me get him on a blanket and we dragged his 110 pound butt into the A/C house and put two fans on him. Brought in the smaller but older black lab also and they are both finally not panting any longer.
If I hadn't been standing by the sink (which looks west) I wouldn't have seen him come to the bucket and I wouldn't have gotten to him in time.

Wow, what a day!!

I hope you are all home so you can care for your critters in this heat. We had plans for tomorrow but cancelled them due to the heat, we will be staying here so we don't have any more problems like we already had today.

Yeah, definately two of them. If you know anybody who want a Buff Chante rooster, free to good home. He's beautiful and friendly. I am only going to keep Opie tho.

Hi everyone...just wanted to stop in a sec and say we are ok here...just have had company from Florida. They must have brought this horrible heat wave with them! Holy cow it is blazing hot.
Hope everyone is staying inside and cool as possible. We have a week of this to get through.

I knew it was hot today, but I wasn't sure HOW hot. The weather channel said the heat index was 111 degrees. Really?! If it was that hot this far north, must have been even hotter for everyone downstate! And tomorrow is going to be just as brutal. I was hoping to move my four week old chicks outside, but I'm going to wait a week when temps are supposed to drop.

Bunni, I am so glad your lab is OK. That definitely sounds like a scary senario, and thankfully you were watchful! I know my parents downstate can't let their elderly black lab out for longer than it takes for him to do his business, since the heat gets to him so fast.

Yes it was very hot today. I let the newbies hang out under the deck a few times today. Blueberry, our new cochin was acting strange today. Just following me around the yard yelling at me so I put her back in the pen. I checked on her a few minutes later and she was panting. I was worried and I went to pick her up and SHE LAID AN EGG IN MY HAND!!!

LOL.

No wonder she was making all that racket. HAHA. It's too hot for all that!

Edit....here is Blueberry and Winter hanging out with my DH under the deck:

oh I was scared, thought he was gona die right before my eyes. I did what I could think to to...COOL HIM FAST, for about 10 minutes before going up to wake hubby. I couldn't have gotten him in the house by myself, he's just too big. He's was lucky I hadn't gone in to set down and crochet, he'd have died for sure.

I think I would have freaked if I saw any of my dogs pass out. I am glad that you happened to notice taht he wasn't doing well and got him in the house! My dogs desperatly wanted to be outside but after a few minutes decided that it wasn't such a good idea. They slept all day in the middle of the living room by the air vents. LOL Last time I let them out they went to potty and then hung out in the garage with Mable (our chicken in jail).
