good morning Opa, glad you got your trash out.
chickengrandma what kid of chicks did you get? hope your problem fixes itself soon. post some pics if you get a chance

I guess I should contact the township and find out what the rules are regarding chickens. I've never bothered to check although it wouldn't surprise me to find out that I'm illegal. Once this area started to become yuppified lots of rules have gone into affect.

I need to pick my horticulture beans this morning as soon as the sun comes up. It's already 73 degrees and they are predicting a heat index of over 100 for later this afternoon. Or maybe I should just make sure the birds have adequate water and kick back and spend the morning reading. I guess I should check the extended weather forecast before I decide what to do.

Cocci is a very common afflictions with chickens and turkeys and because it is so prevalent I wouldn't be surprised to find it in almost everyones flocks. Since the parasites that cause it lives in the soil, once its there it is almost impossible to get rid of. I don't think that there is an effective method of treating the ground. You would have to move your birds to virgin earth. The biggest risk is for birds less than 12 weeks old. Once they have contracted it and survived they develop an immunity to it.

Even if you were an illegal chicken keeper, I doubt Howell would be able to part you from your chooks! And I'd be all the chicken related sales you make fall under the Michigan Right to Farm. I know nearby Pinckney just approved a chicken ordinance. My parents live in Pinckney, so it was pretty big news when it passed!

I'm actually in Genoa Township very near the city limits of Howell. I am very close to Grand River Ave so it is a convenient location. What is nice is that there are no houses behind me and deer and turkey frequent my yard. I have the advantages of city living yet it still feels country.

Article 3 tells you what you can have as far as livestock Opa.

In my county chickens are legal.....if you have over an acre.

Raz, here is the wording in my warrenty deed from my property:

"The property may be located within the vicinity of farmlands or farm operation. Generally accepted agricultural practices, which may generate noise, dust, odors and other associated conditions may be used and are protected by the Michigan Right to Farm Act."

So my horses and chickens are protected, one of the reasons I live where I do.

Mackinac County, Moran Township

Raz, I would email the data but I cannot access the twp zoning ordinance online (being revised). I would say with 99.9% certainty that DALTON TWP. MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI 49445, is legal to raise chickens, and other livestock. My neighbor across the road raises beef critters and that's just one other farm (of many) on my road.

Another hot one, ayuh! Wifey decided to bring home two chickies yesterday so I've got to dust of the brooder!

I heard my first crow this morning!

I know some people find crowing roos annoying but 'tis music to my ears! It came from my keeper boy, Abe. And it wasn't a wussy crow attempt, he did a true, manly crow! My little ones are growing up!

Good morning Michigan!
Congrats on the crow Stacykins! Loved everyones pictures of their babies and flocks......it is fun to look at the different breeds but always ends up with me wanting MORE!

Raz...I will email you soon as I finish here! Sounds like a great idea for your class.
